Does anyone here use a large bass drum a la Bonham? I believe I read that he used a 26". I notice that the most common seems to 22"x 18" and some times 24".
Do any of you folks playing double bass sets use a "unmatched" pair (i.e. 22" and a 18")
Inquiring minds want to know.

The problem with big bass drums is they can make mounted toms too dang high, unless you can mount them to the side of the drum to lower them a bit, or use shallow shell toms which I find to be pretty cool. I've had 26, 24 and now 22. The 22 is the best sounding but can probably be contributed to knowledge, drum quality, heads, tuning and dampening. Different size bass drums would mess with me, like it would Monk. If for some reason I wanted different sounding bass drums, I'd just tune them differently.

I like the 24" size the best. One reason is, you can adjust the beater from center to off center.

pearls they are.. i've changed my setup slightly from this. but i've been really happy with this setup for the last few years.. I feel lost if i play on any "normal" setup after having this.. the 10" tom to the left of the hat is a must for me now.

Just a 24, the thing is big enough! I'd swap it for a 22 anytime.

i like the 24" because it has this low end you don't reach with a 22", you can tune the head up so the beater has a rebound and still have this low end.
I think the Pearl are the nicest sounding industrial made drum shells; just watching TV, and i hear it's a Peals because it has this warmth.

I play a 28'' bass drum. With calfskin- that's kind of big for plastic. It sounds awesome! Great to have a kit that is not top-heavy, like almost all drum kits are. Most bass drums only sound like their drummers want them to sound with EQ and compression. This 28" sounds great right there in the room.
I don't have rack toms, just a big old 18" floor tom, when toms are called for. Really there's just a couple songs I do that really need a tom, and that's with mallets.
