Hi there....
I want to buy one of those electronic drums for my boyfriend for his coming birthday. The problem is I have no clue about drums of any kind, or any musical instruments for that matter.
I went on kelkoo.co.uk and found a digital drum called Yamaha Digital Drums DD55 and it costs about 140pounds, around US200 something...
I was wondering if that is a good enough drum set cause I don't wanna get him something lousy...But at the same time, I don't need to get him something professional. I just wanna get him the set cause he used to play drums and he got excited when he saw an electronic drums recently... so it's something just for fun.

I would really appreciate the help!!!

thanks!!!

The Yamaha DD55 looks pretty much like a toy.

Is this just something for him to goof around on? Are there any expectations of him actually using this to play in a band setting?

Personally, I'd look into one of the Roland multipads.
This one looks pretty nice, the SPD-S.

It has larger pads, and more of them for him to play. I'd bet anything it has better sounds. It also has a built in sampler. If you don't know what a sampler is, trust me, you guys will have a ball with it! You can record your voice (or anything) and then play it from the drum pads.

Plus it's expandable in a sense. If he ever gets another drumset (electronic or acoustic) he'll always be able to use the multipad for other sounds. Woodblocks or cowbells, bongos or congas, weird effect sounds....anything, really.
They are really pretty handy things for drummers to have around.

It costs more ([i]$499 at Sweetwater), but I think it makes more sense than the Yamaha unit. I certainly think if he really wants to drum he'll get a lot more use out of the Roland unit, no doubt about it.

Here's a link to the Sweetwater page

well you said your guy "used to" play drums. Serious or casual? why did he stop playing? If you think he might be motivated to get back into it, I would agree with Super 8. I have an older model of the Roland unit and I still use it all the time in the studio.

However the Yamaha looks like it would a lot of fun. It has some nice play-along features- perfect for someone who might not have the option of joining a band right now. I read some user reviews that really liked the sound quality.

I guess it all depends on where you think he is at in relation to music right now.

thanks you guys...
my boyfriend didn't use to play the drums seriously... something like a hobby but he was quite good at it and still is actually...
hhmmm... im thinking the Roland 8 is a bit too professional because he doesn't plan on being in a band or anything...
i really appreciate the help... thanks!

Read: "Too expensive" ;\)

Personal opinion here, but I think if the guy can actually play, he'll out grow that Yamaha unit it a pretty short period of time. If that's the case, the Roland unit may be more expensive, but it's certainly more cost effective.
