any of you guys know which brand /model is the best bargain for an all around musicians like myself?
looking for standard bongos(7 and 8" i believe), not small/mini sized.
for congas, looking for a pair with a good stand, cheapest price without sacrificing quality.
thanks guys!!!

It's hard to go wrong with the LP line.
Latin Percussion makes some fairly decent gear - for decent prices.
You should be able to find their gear at your local music store.

LP is good stuff. However, equivalent gear can be had for much less $$$. Cosmic Percussion, Meinl, Toca, and many other companies make excellent inexpensive stuff. Something like Pearl Primero Pro 10" $ 11" congas w/ stand and Groove Percussion JDB-101 bongos would be great pro gear without breaking the bank on 'designer' labels.

Matador makes the best for the money ... when your budget is small.
Personally, I would stay away from Cosmic Percussion. The heads used on these drums are extremely cheap. And as a former drum shop owner, I had nothing but trouble with the Cosmic Percussion.
For a tight budget, Matador is the best, in my opinion, when you need an nice sounding set of bongos and/or congas, and you don't have a lot of $$$ to spend.

Bottom line ... you get what you pay for.
Check Musicians Friend and see what they can offer you in the way of inexpensive bongos and congas. There's a lot to choose from, and the prices are competitive.
If you go with something that is lower in quality than Matador, then it almost doesn't matter what you get, in my opinion. The quality will be the same, so get what you like or looks good.

I own some mid lvel Toca's congas & bogos that I'm very satisfied with. I use fiberglass rather than wood because they are used many for stage (vs. studio) and that cut through a mix better. However, I also get great recorded sound from them as well.
I find Toca to be a litle less costly than LP, but with quality construction.
I can't say much bad about LP (they've been the standard for years) - although the CP series (which is basically the same as the LP Aspire series) do not rate at a pro or even semi-pro level drum.
I do agree the LP Matador series are very good for the price.
I did not own a drum shop, but I worked in one for several years - so I did get lots of hands on with various manufacturers gear. I also found LP & Toca to be of consistant quality (with the exception of the CP/Aspire series)

I managed a drum shop for a couple years. Dunno about current construction but back then the CP congas & bongos were made in Thailand of the same woods as the LP. And there were two CP grades, one obviously cheap while the other had quality finish and heads. That was independent of the Matador line. My CP conga has served me well for over a decade.
But in looking at the CP line even as I type this, I notice it's changed. There are no longer wood congas, and the bongos are obviously cheeeep. My CP conga would be equivalent to today's LP Aspire series, except that my conga came with a top-grade head.
