Hey all...

I've got a Yamaha Hip Gig and a Premier Genista. They work great for different types of gigs, but I can't keep two kits around. So I'm thinking of selling both and getting something in between. A mid-sized kit that's fairly compact but still with great sound. I need something fully pro.

Any thoughts? I'd like a 20" kick or smaller, smallish toms, and little in the way of hardware. Something custom configured would probably be best. I'm thinking Noble & Cooley or Gretsch, but I thought I'd see what you all think.

What about creating your own microkit, using a Floor Tom as your Kick drum, etc.; just getting rid of the Hip Gig kit.

Or ... pick-up a vintage Gretsch kit, since you mentioned Gretsch. I've got a 1968 Gretsch Progressive Jazz kit that is very versatile; with 20- inch Kick drum, 12-inch mounted Tom, and 14-inch Floor Tom.

If you like Gretsch, I bet you'd love FIBES. Check out their smaller drums; they work great for microkits as well as full size kits. I've got a buddy who uses a 18-inch FIBES Kick drum for his Rock gigs as well as Jazz. It's slammin!

Thanks Bart. I had forgotten all about Fibes.

I have the Gretsch Broadkaster kit which is a reissue of their 30's jazz kits, but with much better hardware! It has a 20" kick, 14" floor, 12" rack, 14x5.5 snare. Couldn't recommend it highly enough... all the drummers who play it drool over it.
