i'm not that intelligent when it comes to the beautiful game. i mean, i know what a good play looks like, but i don't know a lot of the international stars or who's a better team in some of the groups.

but if you want to kick me while i'm down, join my pick \'em group at espn.com . all you have to do is pick each side as a win/lose/draw. your pick isn't locked until the game begins. so i can pick the USA's stunning upset victory over the czechs right up to june 9. you only have to register (free) with espn.com.

the group's name is "let's go USA", and the motto is "we'd like to advance." get over it. i'm from the USA, i'm a huge fan of my home team. the group is open to the public, but right now it's just me, my brother, and my friend. join in if you want some world cup fun on the side.

join the pick \'em here.

The most interesting thing I've heard regarding the '06 World Cup is that they expect massive amounts, tens of thousands, of prostitutes in Germany to 'accomodate' the fans. I'm rooting for the prostitutes.

I've got my new DVR all set to tape every match, and espn blocked at work so I can watch the games 'live'.

I lost my connection with soccer. My dad was a great player so I grew up playing soccer more than baseball or football. That was in the late '60s-70s when soccer wasn't as popular for kids as it is now. I reconnect with the game during World Cup and Summer Olympics.

My 2 best soccer memories with my father:
- going to the Felt Forum in NYC to see the '74 World Cup finals on closed circuit TV. We went with an Argentinian friend of his who took us out for a native steakhouse dinner after the game.

- in 1975, we went to the first home game Pele played for the NY Cosmos at Randall's Island. The stadium was packed with Brazilians. The flags. The drums. Way cool. We saw another Cosmos game 2 years later when Pele, Beckenbauer, and Chinaglia were all on the team.

Rochester is a big soccer town. We have a new soccer stadium opening tonight for our "minor league" team. The game is sold out at 14,000. That's better attendance than many MLS teams.

Lol, actually I quite prefer "the beautiful game". Fans in this country (or at least the people I know) really don't like it being called soccer, but then we did change the name of your sport to American football - I assume you guys just call it football?

I'm pretty excited.

Sounds like Brazil is loaded.

I'll probably be rooting for the US (my home country), Italy (my home country temporarily too many years ago), and the African teams ('cause I just gotta). Unfortunately for me, the US is in the same opening group as Italy and Ghana...

I was hoping to see Cameroon in the tourney again. Oh well.

Only a few more days!

Peace.

I think that the US is fielding one of their best teams in years. Should be an interesting World Cup for the Americans. Although I'm conflicted about the US playing Italy in group play. DRAT!

The one World Cup story that's had me chuckling has come out of the UK. Apparently England has issued an ultimatum to some 2,000 known *football* hooligans, saying that they have to turn in their passports. I'm also curious to see if FIFA's stance against racism is going to be enforced. Racist chants have become all too common at European *football* matches, especially in Italy and Spain. And the ultra-rightwing fans of clubs like Italy's Lazio are downright scary! I hope we don't see sentiments like that spilling into this World Cup.

I don't think there's anything funny about us making 2,000 hooligans hand in their passports, it's unfortunately something that has become necessary and has been quite successful in recent tournaments. Racism has unfortunately been creeping back in for the last decade and has apparently been especially rife in Eastern Europe - the German officials expect the most trouble from Poland.

I apologise to anyone who may think I'm pinpointing their countries as troublemakers which isn't my intention and I sincerely hope we have a fantastic, troublefree tournament.

Now, how many people in America are going to get behind their team? I hope you guys will show them how proud you are of qualifying - the team did exceptionally well in the last tournament. \:\)

we're as proud of qualifying as is mexico, holland, brazil, france, la argentina.... we actually tied mexico for first place in CONCACAF qualifying, a first for us. that is the only thing i'm really proud of. i think that has something to do with being rated as a top 10 team in the world. it's not surprising to qualify. it won't even be surprising to advance past the first stage (though i wouldn't be shocked if we get left behind in our group of death).

like the slogans around here say, no one is looking forward to playing us anymore. i like us against italy. certainly our domestic league isn't as talented as theirs, but our best talent is just as internationally mobile as anyone else. and i think we can draw with the czechs and should take care of ghana. of course, no one thought we'd beat portugal four years ago, so all the games must be played.

go USA!

I don't think the situation is necessarily humorous. But it certainly makes you scratch your head when sports fans have become so overzealous that they're being barred from international travel. It is after all only a game. A reasonable person would surmise that there's no need to get violent over something like that.

Absolutely agree with you there.

Robb, the only reason I brought it up is that over here I would say that the common perception in our media is that America as a nation doesn't even care that they are in the World Cup and that the team last time were quite disheartened by it. As I say, and hoping not to sound patronising, I think the US have drastically improved over the last few tournaments - especially since Italia 90.

WHAT??????? Don't let any football fans see that!

The passports have been confiscated for a few years now and it really works. It's only those that have actually been convicted of Football related Violence that it affects. Also they will be required to attend their local Police station on the Days that England is playing. Where they will be given finger paints or playdough to keep them amused.
Most of the hooligans are just using the team colours as a tribal war type thing. The football is third after the beer.

Totally agree, I've watched games in pubs surrounded by those types - a lot of them don't even seem to understand the rules yet they shout the loudest and most aggressively at the screen!

Anyway back to the main topic. Unfortunately there is no way that we can win this year because the player who scores the goals has broken his toe and they have replaced him with someone who aparently (according to the press) has never played football before.

I think we have a particularly strong squad with a lot of versatility on the bench, including, but not only Theo Walcott - if we can make it through the qualifying stages, there is also a very good chance Wayne Rooney will be able to play some kind of part. I personally believe we have our best chance in decades of winning but then, there are a lot of great teams.

Sounds like it's just a weird social dynamic. We have almost too many pro sports in the US, but things never really seem to digress to the level that so many soccer matches reach. And we're certainly not strangers to the booze.

Sorry Rowbee, were still missing that sarcasm emoticon.

I think we may have a better than usual chance, even if it is created by the whole team having to focus because some of the stars are not there. From what I hear a lot of the side will be home grown West Ham players, although I'm not totally sure, and this usually bodes well if they know each others game.

Doh, sorry, I can't believe I didn't note the irony in what you were saying - yes, the media have whipped us into a panic about Rooney and placed the weight of the world on a 17 year old.

Well, it would've been nice if the US's Freddy Adu had made the roster. The kid is a phenom and he just turned 17.

Nick, sorry for my ignorance, but is Soccer (for Men) a pro sport in the US. I was last there in '94 during the World cup but on Business not pleasure (Windsor and Detroit). I remember the Brazilians going mad driving up and down waving flags leaning out of car windows and blowing horns. But my recollection was that it was considered a game for women and the professional Soccer League was women. Although there was some talk of the Men going pro following the interest generated by the World Cup.

The pro soccer league in the US is called the MLS, or Major League Soccer. The game has been a lot more popular since we hosted the World Cup in 1994, but it really hasn't gained a mainstream audience yet. Most of the people that I see at MLS games in NY are internationals or kids who play soccer attending with their parents. There have actually been some great players coming over to the MLS, but unfortunately a lot of the great players on the US men's team are still playing in Europe. There were even talks about Ronaldo coming over to play in the US, but apparently that's not going to happen yet.

The US Women's national team gained a lot more notoriety than the men's team. Especially after the mens team's abyssmal performance in '98 and the women's team winning their World Cup tournament. That popularity for the women's game led to a women's pro league, but that has since folded.
