I want to remote a guitar/bass amplifer in a different room from the player with out losing quality. Existing cable runs vary from appx. 50ft. to 150ft. I would like to have 2 boxes with 1/4" guitar plug and XLR mic connector. One to plug guitar into and then XLR out to Mic cable. At the other end: XLR mic in and 1/4" out to guitar/bass amplifer. Can this be done with direct boxes? or transformers or I would be willing to build them. Any one know best way to do this?
Thanks

In my opinion, the best way to accomplish this task: Use 2 piece amps (head & cabinet). Keep the head with the player and remotely locate the speaker cabinet... with speaker wire. This solves several problems, not the least of which is when the player wants to tweak his settings.

My favorite method is to use two passive D.I. boxes. You plug the guitar into one and use the balanced output with a mic cable to make the long run. Then you plug the mic cable into the second D.I. and use the input or parallel output to plug in the amp. Active D.I. boxes won't work especially for the second box which is actually using the transformer backwards.

As I mentioned on the other forum where you asked about this, I'd suggest a fiber optic cable. I did read an article once on how to uild one for guitar appilcations. I forget which magazine it was in, but it might have been Craig anderton who wrote the piece. If not, maybe he'll have some suggestions regarding this.

Phil A has a good suggestion as well... I'd rather run a 50' speaker line than a 50' guitar cable.
