Are any of you guys listening to the new MARS VOLTA album 'Frances The Mute'? -- its incredible.. Just wanted to share that with anyone who might care. If you dont have it, I highly recommend it. I think this will be one of the best albums of the year, (potentially the decade)
Also, the new Queens of the Stone Age comes out today. I cant wait to hear it.
(I had to post this as a new topic cause the last one go's all the way into early 04.) I'm curious what you guys are into right now. LATER!

I haven't got around to getting Frances The Mute yet, but I did get Deloused a few weeks ago. It's a magnificent album.
Funny though, I can't see how it is so "complex". I've been listening to stuff like Dream Theater and Yes all my life. Guess that makes this sort of music easier to swallow
I saw the new QOTSA yesterday, but didn't get that one yet either. Lack of money, plus I just bought the Who's Who's Next album.

Got some new tracks by QOTSA. The production is simply unbelievable. Must listen. (the drum sound alone is worth the price o' purchase)
Recently got back into Jellyfish. I haven't listened to their stuff in a few years.
Michael Buble: IT'S TIME.
Kelly Clarkson: BREAKAWAY.
Head Automatica: DECADENCE

David Crowder Band- the Lime CD mostly live disk; "Undignified" rocks; great energy all around (although the scratcing is a bit too high in the mix for my tastes)
Neal Morse- ONE great prog album; Randy George plays just what the songs need without turning it into an unnecessary chopsfest
Secret Machines: Now Here is Nowhere Nice retro sounds, some great grooves (that sometimes get stretched a bit too long)no virtuosity per se, but good overall album.
The Big Chill soundtrack (I know, it's nowhere near new) I jammed with some guys last week; very Dream Theater-inspired riffs and such; then the keyboardist starts playing some old Motown, like "Get Ready". While familiar with it and respecting it, I never really studied or got into Motown. Doing some homework for the next jam.
Need to go out and get: Kino- Picture Show (I thinkthat's the title...) new side project for Pete Trewavas of Marillion; with guys from It Bites and Porcupine Tree
Interpol- I might see them Thursday night; haven't heard much of their stuff and I like some familiarity at a show.

I'm listening to the new Nine Inch Nails single that's been released on their website.
Much more structured, mature songwriting, very live, raw sound. I think I'm going to love the album.

I'm digging on Frances the Mute quite a bit, too.
I'm also listening to the major-label debut from Eisley; rhythm section is boring, but the singing is out of this world (gorgeous female harmonies), and the songwriting is pretty good.
I'm looking forward to the new Dredg album coming out in a month or two. That's probably my most anticipated album for 2005. If any of you haven't checked out Dredg yet, please go listen to el cielo! That album is a masterpiece. Excellent music and musicianship, with a unique sound; proggy/arty without being wanky or too pretentious, with a little bit of a punk vibe.

I'm listening to John Petrucci's recently released solo CD, Suspended Animation. It shreds and rocks, of course, and Dave Larue does a damn fine job of backing up one of the best guitarists around.

Ever wonder what the Hill's Angels are doing now?
Dancing with their walkers?
Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you...

I haven't added much since the last edition of this thread, pretty much the same rut of Galactic, MMW, Tower of Power, Bela Fleck, Victor Wootens solo albums, Stevie Wonder... it's all in the Media Player shuffle.

Strapping Young Lad - Alien Released on Tuesday this week. One of the review stickers on it summed the album up nicely: "This is the sound track to our impending Armageddon". Indeed. This is a chaotic assault on the senses that will make previous fans of the band smile; and will probably terrify everyone else.
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? Been listening to this album a lot again lately. Jimi's big first album. Brilliant. Classic. Favorite tune from said album: May This Be Love. What a great song.
John Zorn - Naked City I guess this is called "acid jazz"... whatever it's called, I like it. Been a while since I've listened to this album. I forgot how much I like it. If you dig the random psychotic music of Mr. Bungle, you'll likely dig this.
Toy Matinee - Toy Matinee A great pop rock band that was fronted by Kevin Gilbert. This album is fantastic. Great playing, clever song writing, and more hooks than a tackle box...

Stereophonics - Language. Sex. Violence. Other? : Their latest release. A little too over-produced for my tastes, but great songs none the less.
Queens Of The Stone Age - Lullabie To Paralyze : Again, their latest. Wow! IMHO some of the more original rock that's out there today, even more so than Songs For The Deaf, which I thought was great.
And I'm patiently waiting for Marcus Miller's latest, Silver Rain, to be released (4/12, I believe)

This song does indeed rule.
As far as what I'm listening to - I've been shut out from new stuff since I got a 20 GB player in my car:
Ramones - Ramones Mania. "The KKK took my Baby Away" always makes a day of monitor-staring easier at work.
Ray Charles - "The Definitive Ray Charles". Okay, so I jumped on the bandwagon after the movie. But this rules nonetheless.
Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Just because this album never gets old.

The sweeping, hard panning is kind of what I like about it. Aside from the absolutely beautiful note choices - and it's almost all hammer ons and pull offs, which makes it really smooth and sort of 'liquid' sounding. Must listen to it now.
A side note to this song: in the movie Singles, when Steve and Linda are sitting listening to music in Steve's apartment, this song is one of the ones they listen to. For some reason I always think of that scene now when I hear the song.

A friend saw them play live a couple of days ago at UC davis and pronounced it one of the best live shows ever. I really like hearing nin live, more than when trent reznor records material. The band sounds awesome too, Jeordie white seems to be everywhere in the hard rock scene lately.

a little earlier, Otis Redding.

Right now, I'm listening to Al Green's album Unchained Melody on CD. I found it last night for $6, & had to get it--check the tracks: "Pretty Woman," "Unchained Melody," "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Hou Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "Take Me to the River," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "I Can't Get Next to You," "My Girl," and (believe it or not) "Light My Fire."
Awesome album. Also to be filed under great rhythm sections--I believe this album has LeRoy Hodges & Al Jackson, Jr. Jackson is probably my favorite drummer ever. (A search will turn up posts from me waxing poetic over his playing.) And Hodges' playing is incredible. Why don't we hear more about this guy? Anyway, I'll be taking these lines down, that's for sure!
