Who's your favorite bassist, among those who never appear in the standard "pantheon" of great bassists? Mine would have to be Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads. Although her first day with TH was also her first day ever playing the bass, I think she gave them some very interesting lines which were always exactly what the music called for. It's very simple, no really hard chops, but it grooves, sounds cool, and makes *great* use of space. I don't get the sense that she's one of the "biggies," but she's definitely worth listening to, and I've learned a lot from listening to her: "less can be more," "serve the song," "above all, groove"--these are incredibly valuable lesson!. Check out especially "More Songs about Buildings and Food" (esp. "Found a Job") and "Speaking in Tongues."

WILLIE WEEKS I dont know if he would be considered underrated but I have not read much about him - and he is a fine bassist who has appeared on many many hits...
The Rolling Stones Its only Rock N Roll is an example.
He has played on many George Harrison albums as well - the list goes on....

Check out Barnes and Nobles web site - if you go into the music category and type in the artists name the site displays all albums that artist appeared on.

Very cool thread so far. Tina Weymouth's less is more. Willie Weeks the prolific. I guess mine would be a toss up between Graham Maby's work with Joe Jackson (esp. The Look Sharp album) Terry Lewis (with the Time) and Fred Hammond (with Radical for Christ).

Leland Sklar?!!!

No way dude I thought this was about the "not so well known cats". Sklar rules the studio scene in LA along with Laboriel and Stubenhaus.

Who is the bass player for the latest Pink Floyd tours? I've read his name but it never sticks. I think that guy can realy play.

Guy Pratt has been playing with Pink Floyd since their regrouping in the late 80s. Check him out on the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" CD set (he's also on "Pulse," which is excellent, & contains his interpretation of the while of "Dark Side of the Moon"; but imho the bass sounds cooler on "Thunder"). I agree, the guy (no pun!) is really fabulous. I think that he really finds a place where PF can groove & make the music swing, & gives it a modern sound, *and* stays true to the PF sound; that had to be a bit tricky.

I'm not sure if he's exactly underrated, but I don't hear his name as much as I think he's worth: & that's Tom Barney. His bass work with Steely Dan (since '93) has been sheer genius; I wouldn't have thought that anyone could actually *improve* on SD's groove, but he's done it. I just wish they'd give him more of the mix...

(BTW, I agree--Sklar's about as underrated as Lee or Rainey!) ;\)

Colin Moulding of XTC does nice things. And no real argument about Tina Weymouth but don't forget that David Byrne basically replaced her with Busta Jones during their "funk" period, most notably Remain in Light.

Jason Ward of Flotsam and Jetsam. Very knarly bass tone and a good writer to fill the spaces well.

The bassist for Cry of Love. A good straight ahead 4 piece raw rock and roll band. Singer, Guitar, Bass, Drums.

Monty Colvin, formerly of Galactic Cowboys. Monty's currently got a solo project called Crunchy, but he's a very cool bassist, and GC has 7 CDs if you want to check them out.

So many good players out there!

Pino Palladino - great tone, turns every track he plays on into a memorable song.

Rick Anderson (The Tubes) - locks in with the drummer like a machine!

D'Arcy Wretzky (Smashing Pumpkins) - driving lines that are perfect for the songs.

Ricky Brooks (The Nixons) - the best high tech rocker you've never heard.

Jeff Abercrombie (Fuel) - I like the groove that Jeff adds to this straight ahead alternative quartet.

Robert "Kool" Bell (Kool and the Gang) - Funkmeister!

Bernard Edwards (Chic) - ULTRA-Funkmeister!!

Walter Becker (Steely Dan) - Chuck Rainey doesn't play ALL of those great bass lines!

My vote goes to Andrew Harkin of The Prodigals. He's practically the lead player in that band. It's great!

Dee Murray from Elton John's early albums.

If he's the guy who played those horribly out of time bass parts on Tumbleweed Connection...I respectfully have to disagree. I like the fat sound of his bass but he was on another planet in those sessions.

Some bassists are not *exactly* underrated, but they're sort of "tweeners"--great bassists whose names don't come up that much. Why don't we hear more about Greg Lake, or John Wetton? These guys are absolutely incredible!

As in Flim and the BB's and James Taylor's band? Killer.

I would have mentioned Pino Pallidino, but I didn't think he's considered underrated.

I'll pick Bruce Thomas from Elvis Costello's Attractions, yet another clever Brit bassist.

Kevin Bacon of "Comsat Angels" delivered a dark, aggressive and minimalist sound that I've always loved.

Well, I love all of Elton's albums...just Tumbleweed Connection the bass always bothered me. Nice lines and all just seemed out of pocket.

Dee started playing on all the songs from around Honky Chateau on through the mid eighties, I think

Well, Honky Chateau has some killer bass on it, Rocket Man rocks. Dee Murray is obviously underrated, I didn't know his name. \:\)

I just checked the Allmusic.com guide, he played on "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" too, another great album with some cool bass playing.

Ok - heres some obscure ones.

Charlie Biddle - wonderful upright Jazz player based in Canada. He's a man who can make a walking line speak. Check out the Bruce Willis movie The Whole Nine Yards for some great examples of his playing.

Gary Lunn - a fretless player that doesn't sound like a Jaco clone. There is a great album by Robin Crowe called Creator that features Gary's fretless work. Brilliantly understated.

There is a band based out of Australia called D.I.G. or Directions in Groove. They have gone thru a few bassists, most of which have been very talented.

Max Stowers. Heres a guy worth checking out. He's a jazz/funk player based in Auckland, New Zealand. Fine player who deserves to go a long way - real nice guy too!! Check out his web site: Max Stowers

There are many fine players around who - for what ever reason - never get the big break. We all know someone like this and we should all do what we can to help them achieve all they can.

Yours at the low end,

Gray.

I don't know if Pete Trewavas ever appeared in the standard "pantheon" of great bassists... But his playing on two studio CDs by Transatlantic is very, very good.
Also of note is his earlier work with Marillion, IMO.
