Just got the new Poison CD,Hollywierd.
Don't think the could have thought up a better name. Now I am a big poison fan from way back, I hove all their albums, except the greatest hit thing they did not long ago(I really don't like greatest hits) But this CD sucks. I use to think their biggest problem was getting rid of CC, but he is back now, and it still sucks.
I really dig the guitar sounds, that's what I want to hear in a rock band(I know the popular trend right now, is to hate that sound).
But the songs just plain suck. Their old stuff has much better songs than this. I thought writing was something that got better with age.

Poison, Ratt, Scorpions, Guns'n'Roses....
never COULD tell the difference. But still, a possible explanation.

Could be that, in context of the groups heyday, that since that time, your taste has grown, and maybe their material hasn't. I've gone through this before. There are a few artists whose older material I still love, but over the years, they still attempt the same old same old. And it never works. What they had to say was relevent once, but times have changed. And I don't mean the commercial trend in music or lyrics, just that their original audience has moved on, and the newer audience is coming from somewhere else.
They're not talking to who you are now, and can't relate to who's there in your place.

At least, that's one way to look at it!

Yeah, Look at AC/DC ,they have put out the same album 15 times in a row.It looks like they would grow just a little in 30 years.

I agree that AC/DC is still doing the same thing they did way back when, but it is still good stuff to me. I like AC/DC. There is nothing new or pretentious about them, they are just doing what they do. And for their Genre, they do it well.
But this Poison CD, you could tell Bret threw in a line, just to make it rhyme. On a few of the songs, the different parts didn't seem to fit, kinda like they just threw it together. On this Particular CD, I am saying they have transgressed as craftsmen, If they ever truly were.
Their old stuff was anthemic(I just mad that word up)good strong hooks, and they were able to build around those hooks, and make songs, but now, it's like they just threw a bunch of crap together. Doesn't sound like Bret put much thought into his lyrics at all.

Geez,

I haven't even heard the song, but I used to really like Poison on some of their older cuts. Just reading through the posted lyrics was a painful experience. I was trying to force some type of the benefit of the doubt when I read the second to the last line.... Sounds like they decided to try to retell "Hotel California" by the Eagles, only in their own words............ But not quite as effective in the results.

That line mimicked;

Relax, said the nightman
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave

Sounds to me like they're writing about the same place. Without listening to Hotel California, just pondering some of the obvious lyrics that are standing out....

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champaigne on ice
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device.............

Sounds like they might have been talking about the likeliness of a whorehouse too; Poison just comes right out and blurts the obvious out without Poise.

The intellectual stimulation generated by all writers in the Eagles realm exercise the cognitive senses. You hear what they are saying, but on many of their songs, you need to be above average intelligence to comprehend the context of what it is being said in their story line, or to recognize the jest in the cantankerous insults that they so freely toss about. Getting inside of your mind is how good artists become GREAT; they leave a lasting impression.

 Ahh, c'mon, Anifa! With all the fine examples of Eagles songs, why did you have to bring up "Hotel California"? GAD!

:D Think about it!!!

Here's Poisons' lines:

Once you enter you can never get out of here
Welcome to Hollywierd

Here's the Eagles' lines:

You can check out anytime you like,
but you can never leave

Welcome to the Hotel California..........

READ and compare the similarity; amazing resemblance, don't you think???

THAT'S WHY I brought up Hotel California! It wasn't one of my favorites by the Eagles either; after all the Eagles, as a group in combination with the individual members as solo artists, have written or sang SO MANY great hit songs that Hotel California would fall shy of making the Top 40 if one were to pull all of their materials together for the countdown.

Like I said before, I haven't even heard the Poison song yet; but instantly upon site of the lyrics that were posted, the song Hotel California popped into my head. I thought "Damn, this guy must have been rolling a FAT ONE, and sucking it down while he had Hotel California jamming in the background when writing this song; seems as though it might have been his inspiration for his latest release of Hollyweird.

Where's the freekin originality

Ummm, not to offend anyone, but personally, I think Poison sucks. They were one of the bands that ruined heavy music in the 80's. The best thing that I can say about them is that they didn't suck as much as Warrent.

I haven't heard the new CD but from the lyrics and timing it does look a little like plagiarism to me. But I heard it's only stealing if they copy more than 8 bars of music. Yes???

HEY! The best power ballad ever written was by Poison! Every Rose Has It's Thorn is great!! First song I ever learned on guitar!

Ew cold coffee, gross... blagh!

About the only thing as bad as cold coffee is warm beer.

However, an iced latte is pretty good. Mmmm...iced latte...

Something happened to my reply up there, Anifa! So I'll briefly repeat.

I see what you mean, now. And that concept in the Eagle's song seems familiar to me from another song I can't recall right now.

But it also recalls what songwriter Sammy Cahn said of George Harrison's trouble over the "My Sweet Lord/He's So Fine" plagarism hassle:

"I don't know of one songwriter out there, including ME, who hasn't lifted at least ONE idea from another composer!"

Nothing new under the sun? Perhaps!
