Just occured to me that hip hop has so dominated the urban music scene and that clasic funk as been edged out of existence. This occurred to me in my local music shop as Maceo Parker's( sax player for James Brown) disc ws on - very good stuff.
In any case, I was not a big fan of funk in the old days. But I have grown to appredciate it more and more. Many variations from R. James , G. Clinton , going back to Sly Stone etc.
Where's da funk these days? R & B coexists with hip hop but not funk as far as I see.
Prediction- as the pendulum swings I smell a comeback at some point - this genre is just too powerful to slip away.

There is a local act in the Washington Metro Area called the "Clones of Funk." They supposedly do the whole get up with the clothes, lights, etc. I've never seen them, but they have a really good reputation around town. And like the always knowledgable RobT said, there are a lot of mainstream acts with much funkiness on the bottom. My cousin, a true funkateer, was telling me how he heard so much Parliament in Rage Against the Machines' "Battle of Los Angeles." He was really impressed at how they sneaked it in there.
A little off topic but kinda on, you know what I love about Funk. It's undeniable, and very physical. The music gets into your system, and gets your body twisted. I love the pure undeniable physicality of it. A good Go-Go band does the same thing for me. Whether you like it or not, if you listen long enough your body will be forced to dance.

Hell yeah. You can find funk in all kinds of odd places. I have very a good bass playin' buddy who actually swears he's happiest playing funky basslines in a non-funk band environment (i.e. a rock band or acoustic act.)
Check out Power Station's album for non-funk band funk. Remember that old conglomerate of Robert Palmer, John & Andy Talyor (from Duran Duran) and Chester Thompson? That shit is FUNKY.
Most of Rage's stuff is also pretty funky. There are unreal grooves on Pantera records. Outkast is funk personified.
I think funkiness (as it is truly intended) is more about attitude and a bouncable groove than anything else. Even though I love J.B. and P. Funk (and all of its permutations), The outfits and flamboyance are merely stage dressing for the attitude. Hell... I found some funky shit on Kiss records.

Well, to the degree that they aren't just patched together remixes, it would have to be Bootsy & George, wouldn't it ? As to where the funk the Funk has gone, well, some of it's at my house & if you've ever gotten it some of it's 'round your way, too ! PS, PFunk AllStars & Bernie Worrell, both regularly gig.

There is still a remnant of real funk out there. Motown has this Canadian whiteboy with an album called frome the heart or something. His name is Remy Shand, he must have grown up on soulfood, cause he definitely got soul. If you miss the funk, check him out.

there are a few local bans here in Los Angeles holding it down. "Birthday Suit" is one I've seen and they've just released a record:
