It's kind of like TAXI. You pay them a monnthly fee to find out that your songs aren't commercial enough. Ooops, I sound jaded. Disregard that. You have to decide if the fee is worth the slim chance of your songs getting heard by someone in a position of power. You can always try it and quit if you don't like it. But for the most part I think Tonos is on the up and up.

I am a member of TONOS. I haven't been with them long enough to witness any real results yet. There are some really good industry tips in their archive pages accessible to only pro members; I have some samples of the articles on my site Don Passman at TONOS . I personally, just enter some of their industry opportunities and tend to steer away from other features offered. I've entered about three competitions and actually two of them just had their closing dates so I can't really give true results as to the feedback one gets. I didn't really get any feedback on the Max Martin challenge that I entered back in March. The new opportunities are sent to members as they open so you are alerted as to when they become available. TONOS provides an area where you can upload up to 7 or 10 mp3's that will be converted for streaming live, and you can put up a profile including your picture. If you don't have a web site of your own, this could be a great and not so expensive way to gain exposure. It gives you an online presence and gives the industry professionals an opportunity to stumble onto you as they "DO" tap in to the members profiles. These features in themselves are worth the money spent, but there are a few downfalls...

I'm not really excited about their message boards. I think that maybe the forum moderator may be deleting entire messages which breaks the string and you end up jumping from one topic to another. Before you know it, you are completely off of the topic you began with and reading something entirely different than what you thought you were reading; very distracting and even somewhat obnoxious. The boards are also open to ALL queries and there are a lot of KIDS on them seeking overnight success... GROUPIE kind of fanatics that do not ask a lot of intelligent questions. There is nothing wrong with asking dumb questions because that's how you learn; but it's kind of like being thoroughly educated and going back to elementary school. Since I've came on board here in the musicplayer forums, I haven't been back to TONOS forums. These boards are better informed and well maintained.

Over all, if you don't have a web site, TONOS could be a great place to start. It's uniform in appearance, but it gives you a formatted profile acceptable to the pro's. Plus, even if you do have a web site, the profile will allow you to place your link to your site and direct the pro's to your personal site. Beats paying a company to get your site listed in a search engine and you immediately get the audience you are seeking to draw.

Actually, Babyface is one of the owners of TONOS. If you want to enter the Michael Jackson competition, you HAVE to be an AOL member. I just got rid of AO Hell so I think I'll pass on that one. \:D

I used to be a member of Tonos before they tacked on a price tag and called themselves TonosPro. I'm not saying that they're not good in any way. I was seriously thinking about paying the fee for "join." But I feel that my chances on being discovered are as equal to the chances if I "do it myself or go about it the old way." I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just me. Maybe I'll change once I improve on my songwriting skills. You can join for a three to six months just to see if you'll like it or get results.

Like DeSoto said,

And also what Ani'Fa said (among other important detailed info.),

Try it out.

For the record, I'm thinking about entering the Michael Jackson lyric contest just for the hell of it. But I am uncertain about copyright. Since the song itself has a title, would it make any difference if I register my copyright of it or just do it and submit it? Ani'Fa, any thoughts about this?

Knowing Michael Jackson's history of slipping in under the belt and buying (ripping) the rights to the Beetles intellectual property rights right from beneath their noses.... well, I'd say enter at your own risk. I entered the Max Martin Challenge with unprotected lyrics, and I've never heard anything back; but who's to say that the lyrics will not be heard somewhere down the road by another artist. I've since ONLY entered copyright registered works to a few other industry opportunity announcements and one to the A & R Drop Box.

I don't know anything about tunos (considering maybe joining though), but I can say you MUST copyright everything. If there is an opertunity for it to be stolen, it will be. I don't care how reputable someone may seem, the bigger they are, the more likely they are to steal. It may seem cynical, but I kid you not.
