Hello all, I used to post here a year or so ago, now I'm back. So, I'll get right to it.
I hear a common complaint from people, generally those who rely on MTV and the radio for music, that rock is stagnant, nothing new is any good etc etc. I know this to be bullshit, but rather than debate with the same tired old arguments, why don't we make this more rewarding.
If you'd like, name me 3 bands that: A) You feel many folks may not be aware of B) You feel are above the pack for whatever reason C) Rock.
My definition of rock is pretty damn loose, so let's not get bogged down in semantics. If it has guitars, you may call it rock.
Here's mine -
1. Mammoth Volume - A single book of songs Swedish rock band with GREAT instumentation and songwriting.
2. Queens of the Stone Age - S/T @ Rated R
Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri from Kyuss, Dave Grohl on the skins, Mark Lanegan singing...new album out soon.
3.Sir Hedgehog - S/T
Tight pounding 70's rock meets metal. Think Sabbath meets Priest meets Soundgarden.

Stereolab "Sound-Dust" (Like St. Etienne, but weirder) Qurashi "Jinx" (Icelandic Rap. That's right.)
OST "Amores Perros" (Great primer for Latin Rock newbies. 2CDs with lots of big names: Cafe Tacuba, Ely Guerra, Julietta Venegas etc. En Espanol.)
Remy Shand "Way I Feel" (Okay, another Marvin Gaye/Curtis Mayfield Superfly '70s wannabe, but the guy can *play*.)
Buckethead...anything. (Tiresome at album length, but he's doing more cool things for instrumental rock than most of the 80s guitar-god leftovers.)
Squarepusher aka Tom Jenkinson, "Go Plastic" (He's weird, yo.)

What's got my balls? My tennis balls? My debutant balls? My melon balls?
Okay...
1. Stan Hirsch (www.stanhirsch.com), rocks all by his little lonesome. Stunning stuff.
2. Dave Edmunds (www.daveedmunds.com), go dig up a copy of the "Repeat When Necessary" album, he rocks! It's not a recent album, but it's one of my all-time favorites.
3. Junior Brown (www.juniorbrown.com), he's fairly well known, but not well known enough considering what a bad ass guitar player he is, see him live and he'll cook your mind.

Hey Erik, as you can see all of my favorites have called it quits. You're up on indie bands, Help us out. Jedi... Yer gonna be sorry you asked. Sapling mentioned some good ones. QOTSA is a great one for rock. Mark Lanegan (former Screaming Trees vox) has also joined the band for the upcoming tour. Definitely something to see/hear. Mammoth Volume is another monster -- very nice.
More good stuff: High On Fire -- Stoner rock with a serious edge. Think Black Sabbath meeting Blue Cheer and Black Flag.
Speedealer -- Motorhead's youngest brother.
Elf Power -- Seriously wacko indie rock -- they even use the Crimson Tide marching band!
The Hellacopters -- Swedish rock with a shot of Grand Funk and Joe Walsh.
Jucifer -- Husband/wife duo that rocks like all hell. Kinda like Juliana Hatfield on steroids. Check out this woman's guitar rig sometime. It's a guitar stack, a bass rig and part of a PA. Talk about loud...
The Atomic Bitchwax -- Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell's mostly instrumental side project. Rocks so hard it's silly.
Neko Case -- Sounds like Patsy Cline... and looks like an indie princess.
Milligram -- Boston rock. Sounds like Motorhead in a car accident with Led Zeppelin, The MC5 and Black Sabbath.
Nebula -- T.Rex meets Hendrix at Led Zep's summer house?
Sixty Watt Shaman -- Baltimore boys make good... Good ol' fashioned rock with raspy vox and a Southern tinge.
Oneida -- NYC noisy rock. Imagine Andy Warhol's art-school set with a nasty attitude.
The Wellwater Conspiracy -- John McBain (former Monster Magnet guitarist) and Matt Cameron (former Soundgarden drummer) get together to create some ctachy, yet bizarre psychedelia.
Sheavy -- The singer sounds JUST like Ozzy, the band sounds kind of like an average stoner rock act. It's cool.
The Supersuckers -- ROCK ROCK ROCK.
Electric Frankenstein -- See The Supersuckers.
The Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight -- Members of Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, Eyehategod rock the shit out of some semi-improv instrumentals.
The Fearless Freep -- A Canadian schoolteacher who writes, produces and records his own stuff. Very reminiscent of Guided By Voices. One of his songs was featured on the TV show 24.
The Donnas -- four 19 year old ladies who think they are The Ramones.
I'll stop now, but I have about a million more. Like I said -- You asked.

Amanda Wow, hard to believe someone else around here digs Dave Edmunds! He's one of my all time favs.
In the same vein check Nick Lowe and Web Wilder.

OK...here's one:
Bitch Alert
They are band from Finland.
I heard the cut "Loveson" from their debut album called "Pay for Orgasm" (love their name/titles!), that was released on a compilation CD called "Reindeer Rock - The Finnish Compilation 2001"
The song just knocks me over!!! Raw, gritty pop/punk. It's a 2 girls/1 guy trio, and they look like they are in their teens still...but that song is a kick...makes you want to play it LOUD!
Here are a couple of links to them.
Their record company
Bitch Alert home page
I don't know if all their stuff is like the song "Loveson"...but if it is, I want to hear some more.
Oh...almost ALL the artists on that Finnish Compilation CD are excellent. I don't know where you can get it...it was a promo that I got from a friend that runs a college radio station.
Almost forgot...all the artists sing in English...so you can't tell where they are really from...

Right now, WE do 'I Hear You Knocking' and in other bands I've done; Crawlin' from the wreakage, Girl's Talk, Cruel to be Kind, Warmed Over Kisses, Heart of the City, and some more I can't think of right now.
Always thought 'Half a Boy and Half a Man' would go over well.

I guess everyone knows about Jeff Buckley by now? Cocteau Twins didn't exactly "rock", so...
1) Early Midnight Oil: _Red Sails_, _10...1_, _Head Injuries_.... this stuff rocked big time, completely brilliant arrangements, wonderful harmonies, juggernaut ensemble sound, *intelligent* "political rebel" lyrics... *NOT* what you probably think of as what the band sounds like today. Severely rocked. The best two guitar band there's been, the only two guitar band I think that has utilized the advantages: there's more to it than Judas Priest harmonies. Great creativity... Featuring one of the coolest rock drummers in the Keith Moon style IMO, Rob Hirst: like Phil Rudd, this guy can play just a straight 2-4 beat and it sounds easily just like him. A great thing to own a "feel"...
I don't know what they're thinking now...
2) Early Soundgarden: _Ultramega OK_, _Louder Than Love_ - they were so careening but in a completely deliberate way back then. A lot of people think they started at "Black Hole Sun", but no....
3) Jeff Buckley. Sorry, if you still aren't aware of what he did, you're missing out. Period. Actually, we're all missing out now....

The only band I can think of that never wrote a single love song. The early stuff is great, but I think they were still rockin' on 'Blue Sky Mine.'

now this I can do!
1. Local H - Here Comes The Zoo
Amazing album by a duo (singer covers guitar & bass at the same time). Absolute freakin' rock with elements of grunge, stoner rock, and classic rock. The Misfits' Jerry Only and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme are on the album. Oh, it was produced by Jack Douglas so you know it's not some piece of lo-fi junk.
http://www.localh.com or http://www.palmpictures.com
2. Step Kings
NYC Hardcore at its finest. These guys are freakin' amazing. Both albums they have out are cool. The first one (out on Roadrunner) has the most bad ass cover of "Another Brick In the Wall".
http://www.stepkings.com
3. Shiner - The Egg
Mathy-type rock. The vibe is alot more laidback than the above, but it's a really interesting album (out on Desoto Records). I saw these guys play with Burning Airlines and they absolutely floored me, and I usually hate that Radiohead, artsy kind of stuff.
As mentioned above, the Supersuckers are cool. I dig their punkier stuff, but the more countrifried stuff is not really my bag.
Electric Frankenstein are cool too, but I think there's alot better "garage rock" bands out there like the Chargers Street Gang out of Ohio and the B Movie Rats.
And I gotta say that Quarashi is absolutely horrible. They piss me off more than Andrew WK.
Not because I'm not a fan of their music, but before their video hit MTV/radio, I saw them open for a local band (www.liquidsolidmusic.com) I'm down with. Their entire show was off the computer they had sitting next to the drummer even though they have a guitarist, drummer, and dj. I have no respect for "bands" like that.

I've been jumping around lately to The Hives, Vini, Vidi, Vici album. It's, well it's fun! Besides that disc my favorite song to pogo to at the Bulgarian bar is Defectacon by Le Tigre.
On another note, I can't beleive Rated R isn't more popular. Just a great, great album.
