Hi all, this one's kinda long...

I've been writing songs since I was a kid, on guitar or keyboard, in more or less the Beatles tradition. I've always liked other types of music though, and recently I've been producing beats for a hip hop group.

It seems to take a different side of my creativity--using rhythmic themes instead of melodic themes; writing parts that aren't too perfectly matched (I guess that's so they sound like they could have been sampled); and writing in layers rather than serially across time. When I started the beats were pretty wack, but now my hip hop/R&B producer friends are digging them. It's a lot of fun.

But I haven't written a rock/pop/folk/whatever song in six months. I'm uninspired when I pick up a guitar. On keyboards I can only riff. My melodic sense has been honed to making hooks... whereas I used to be able to "freestyle" an 8-bar melody easily.

Anyway I guess I was wondering if anyone else had experiences writing in a different idiom, and hoping it was positive... Just thought I'd share where I'm at.

I'd also like to talk about what people think are the limitations of hip hop... but please, no general hip hop bashing--every style has its boundaries.

Alright there,i know exactly what you mean about being uninspired when you pick up a guitar, ive been writing for about 6-7 years now and always used the same process accoustic guitar.Thats the beuty of it for me though, going through creative highs and lows,i think it depends a lot on where your heads at.The best part is ive also been using a couple of drum machines for the last 6 month, and once ive got the song ill mess about with them,it definitly helps change the stucture.Cant really comment to much on hip hop,but there are no boundries.......cheers.

reminds me of a quote from i think the guitarist of ACDC when talking about what music he listened to.

"Kick ass music is KICK ASS MUSIC. F*** labels !!!!"

sounds pretty good to me!!!
