What does Device Manager say?

Right click on "My Computer" on the desktop.

Select "Manage".

Select "Device Manager".

Select "Sound, video, and game controllers".

If there is a problem with the sound card, the name of the card (or "unknown device" or some similar message will appear) with either a red X or a yellow exclamation point.
