Well, I tried it on a couple of vintage mics, and as I turned the impedance knob I could hear how the mics gradually came to life.
And then I hooked the mics to a Millenia Origin, where the mics really shined.

Green Lantern,
I have only heard the Vipre briefly so I couldn't comment. BTW there was a huge fuss about it on the forums about 18 months back.
I'm with Loco on the Origin. One of the best things I've ever bought for the studio. It has a huge range of tonal options. The HV pre is really clean, the valve pre a little softer, the transformer option is great fun and the compressor rocks on vocals. Give it a whirl,
cheers, Ruairi

BTW at the risk of repeating myself SOS reviews are practically worthless. Dig a little deeper and your info will be worth a whole lot more,
cheers, Ruairi

My initial reaction to the Vipre was overwhelmingly negative. After further review, with four more units here for the shootout, I must conclude that the first unit I got was broken. The Vipre really sounds great in the right setting. I would say it's worth the price.
But just like every other preamp, I wouldn't want it as my only option.

I can't say enough good things about the Vipre. It's definitely a modern day classic IMO. Beautiful sounding and very flexible.

It's a very good pre with plenty of tonal variations. I never found it to be particularly neutral though so you might want to look at it once you've got that side of things sorted out.
