my new board is not here yet (soundcraft ghost)but it looks like from what i've read that the eq on the channel strip can be bypassed. i wondered if for tracking purposes this would be the way to go? ... then obviously back on for mixes and stuff...

It's a pretty good EQ actually. Doesn't add too much noise. You can bypass it. If you want to use it during tracking, try using an outboard mic pre, then into the line input of a channel to access the EQ, then direct out into your recorder. Better than using the on board mic pre's (which aren't bad BTW...)

i usually try to eq flat when tracking so eqing while tracking is not what i want to do, i just wondered if i would be farther ahead to by pass the circuitry altogether. (is there a reason why it is even bypassable?)

If you aren't using it on the way in, bypass it. Try to aim for the cleanest path to the recorder.

It's bypassable so you can A/B it, so if you start EQ'ing like crazy you can see what a mess you made:)
If you are serious about tracking with an EQ get an outboard one. It will be more flexible and sound better (in most cases!)
