Ok. I know. There are probably tons of gigaByte about this thread in this forum.
But I have to replace my poor and old (but not bad)symetrix 528 with a superb mic preamp.
I'm lookin' for a dual mono (quadra) absolutly stand alone (no eq, no dyn) and my choices are tuned to Avalon AD 2022 that has DI on board or GML 8304 (4 cha)a little more expensive.
The thing that turn me on avalon choice is the horrendous position of phantom power in GML (since I've a rack with no removing back panel).
The thing that turn me on GML is that this board is present in every major studios and I think this could be a guarantee.
Comments from everyone who has listened or fortunately has to these two boards?

Have someone move the GML's phantom switch to the front panel. It wouldn't be that hard to do. That would be my recommendation.

The 8304 is on every version of our planning drafts on our new studio. I hadn't seen the phantom switch was on the back---bleh, that is unfortunate. Hope there is room to move it to the front panel. If not, I will have someone put the switch up on the front of the rack.

Contact GML. Maybe someone here knows somebody there.

;-)

It might be an easier factory-mod than after the fact. I think it's a good idea for a standard feature. Depending on how many you are buying, they might be very accommodating (sp?-that word never looks right to me, even when it is).

Regarding the GML preamps which I wouldn´t be without..;-)

Yes I can agree on that the phantom power on the back is not !! the most.err.."brilliant" place too put them, but hey George must have a reason why !! then again who´ll need a closed back rack these day´s..??

I regard the GML pres as the most comprehensive/versatile pres I have ever owned/worked with. They are build like a tank with veryhigh quality components build to last a lifetime and more. They work every time.. noo funny sounds.. scratchcy pots etc.. which means one can relaxe more in the studio not worring about the equitment, but keep focus on whats important..!!! The music..etc

They sound very, very good (to me) on nearly all sources..with a "tight big warm" lowend, "warm lower mids", smooth high mids, and the most "naturel" relaxed/airy topend. The stereo image resolution is fantastic and tight..the preamp volume´s are exstreemly well matched, and the gain steps "sounds" to me the same at all gain settings...

They are very low noise, low distiotion, high headroom, preamps which means a lot to me in "normal" every day use, but even more when workin with either ribbion mics and/or very large dynamic sources..

Nuf said this time...gotta go to work ;-) I´ll be back

Kind regards

Peter

I would recorment best to something like that yourself. I mean your are the one who´s gonna work with either one..your ears will be the best to "judge" no 2 set of ears are the same no matter what i say or anyone else..in the end you´ll hopefully choose what sounds best and works best to your ears..

Kind regards

Peter

uuugh..that´s not good. I mean I would expect to get a chance to listen to/compare one of these puppies..before I buy..I mean it´s not a small amount of money we talk about here. Where are you located in the world..maybe someone around here can help you to locate a pro dealer who knows how to treat a costumer right in your area..

Kind regards

Peter

I know you specified no EQ, but the 2-610 Dual Channel Tube Microphone & Instrument Preamplifier by Universal Audio is a great option.

I have not used the 2-610 but have tried the M610, and own the 6176. The two units I have tried sound fantastic. Check them out @ http://www.uaudio.com.

Good luck.

I know you were looking at the Avalon and GML, but have you thought about this option? Consider having your Symetrix 528 modified by Audio Upgrades. I had mine done and got the new mic preamp installed too and it was a serious improvement. Well worth more than the $300 it cost me. If you haven't heard about them, do a search at Google groups on Audio Upgrades. Their website is: http://www.audioupgrades.com

Good luck.
