I've only heard it at trade shows. As someone who owned two of the originals and who also owns a Soundelux ELUX 251, I can say they NAILED the cosmetics, and from what I was able to hear at AES, it's certainly close (if not identical) sonically. Problem is, no two 251's sound exactly the same, so saying any clone sounds "identical" is really hard to do, since no two originals sound "identical".
However, the Soundelux is going to cost you about half the price, and while it doesn't LOOK identical, it sounds amazing. I'd rather have one ELUX and a E47 than a single USA Telefunken 251 - more flexibility. However, I am interested in trying a couple of the other new Telefunken models... the C12 clones in particular.

Hi all,
I've had all three in the last month. All are excellent. I bought the ELUX and E-47. I will buy the USA soon as it is smoother in the top end than the Elux. They nailed the new 251 USA. Like my buddy Phil, I had two originals for 12 years and the new one actually sounded a lot less "bitey" than my originals. On one female the USA was breathtaking. On another, the Elux was stunning. When reversed, neither sounded that good on the other girl. Overall the Elux was outstanding. It's certainly great for the price. Phil your right. I took the USA apart and they nailed it down to the screws, kinda scarey.
I hope everybody is well, gotta to get back to my newly born son.
Thanks, Ted.

Just remember that those 3AM feedings are great times to catch up on missed posts and writing replies, IF you can master the art of one handed typing, which is usually pretty easy to master before they stop midnight nursing. The hardest part is capital letters.
Congrats!

That would be 2:51 AM EST. And I see you managed the capital letters pretty well. Go, Daddy, go!

A few years ago, I was answering email with my baby son on my lap and he threw up all over my mac keyboard -- you know the one with the clear casing -- I threw it away (the keyboard, not my son).

If you send your Elux 251 back to Soundelux, David can tune the mic for you anyway you'd like... it seems that most folk who have never heard a real 251 expect it to have an "airy" top [they don't... but that's what these people expect]... David can tune an Elux to have the same top end response as an original 251 without any struggle at all... best part is, you have one with one of the cool Soundelux logos and not the new [really ugly] Soundelux logos...

Hi guys, a propos 251; so how would a re-issue compare to a "copy" Peluso's 22 251 par example vs "the others" ?
I got tired of the overhyped mass=produced "airy-top" tube paradigm. I don't want that no more...I want phat mids, man. I was always wondering that tubes should not have that kind of "air" .I am looking for punch and cream in the middle....I'll carve out my own top and bottom, thank you. Maybe it'ts because of working too much with Brauners - almost perfect "air". And I got the darkest, blunt, uncaring, sultry, temperamental ribbon mic - Oktava ML52 and I LOVE IT.
There, feel better already...
