Hi people - my friend who owns the building in which my studio stuff is located, is obsessed with the following plan: break down the control room and bisect the entire space with an immense vertical glass wall thus creating a larger control room area but a smaller recording area.

The studio itself is located in an old barn with minimal sound isolation or surface treatments for recording needs.

It is located next to one of Europe's busiest waterways - the days and nights are filled with the chugging of riverboats.

The current control room is a small concrete bunker with glass wool filled cinder blocks - very well isolated from external sounds.

I think this is an extremely bad idea because for one 'grand idea', ; the glass wall, it opens up a whole host of problems eg: recording space halved, evil flutter echoes / reflections, the control room would then have extremely poor sound isolation , lots of external noise at that location.

I could personally think of a whole list of other renovating or building that is either sorely needed or would improve the space & somehow a huge glass wall is not one of them.

The idea is for a glass wall but with no apparent plan or consideration of any other factors beyond the sacred glass wall.

Its been an idea floating around for ages but now I am getting nervous because the finances are now there.

The work would be carried out by persons with no or very limited knowledge of recording studio design & needs.

In short it will turn a functioning studio into a dysfunctional disaster area & I will have to bail in order to not be a part of the fiasco.

But there would be a glass wall ov course.

Very nice to look at.

Maybe if I could present some of your replies it could , maybe, somehow, help stave off or at least adjust this most ill advised of renovations.

Obviously I have no say beyond expressing my reservations, as I am merely a renter - no lease. But my reservations fall on deaf ears thus far.

?

Thnx,

RM

BTW - the thought has occurred to me already that this could be the manifestation of some sort of unconscious eviction notice / fire hydrant urination. Because its so hard to fathom - why sabotage a functioning studio?
Anyway..

What model Trident is that in your studio? I've never seen one that looks quite like that.

Trident Fleximix.

Supposedly designed for the live needs of Queen.

I'm not sure it could even be considered a trimmed-down 80 series type deal tho'.

I once did pop a channel strip on an 80 series to compare & they did appear to share all the same components, circuitry, etc...

I concur that the glass wall idea, as described, is terrible :-)

BTW, you have some very cool looking gear--love your old Telefunk pre's. I see the fleximix, what is that other board?

Cheers,

KT

perhaps posting in Ethan's forum would give you more factual ammunition against the glass wall idea. It certainly sounds idiotic, dividing up a room like that.

Around here the Big Live Room is everybody's dream. well, it's my dream anyway.

but if I could play Ann Landers here for a second, I would say that you are not powerless. As a renter, you contribute to the bottom line of your friend's enterprise. Ultimately he risks losing you, your rent, and I am assuming a bunch of gear. You can vote with your feet.

You seem to sense that this may be a warning shot. Maybe you _are being forced out. Either way, start researching other places. Maybe you will find something better.

Your willingness to walk away from a situation that isn't good for you is your strength. Your complaints mean nothing if he knows that in the end you will just take it.

Exactly - pertty much as you say

I do seriously suspect there may be complicated personal undercurrents - this idea has been simmering for years but has now cropped up yet again as a serious plan, coinciding with a big bank loan (means) and my having just bought a 24 trk 2" machine (the end / some sort of envy?)..

Thanks for your thoughts people..

Thanks - I think you prob mean that Neve console, that's a pic of Eccentric Directions in London (owned by the boss of Funky Junk) where I did some sessions with Mike Pelanconi:
http://www.drumdrops.com/about.asp

He's done a whole drum sample / loop series which sounds mega heavy.

Its a 53 series Neve console - sounds excellent!
I never heard such a perfect sound coming through NS10's in my life.

Things are changing there & that desk will go out and a Sony MXP3000 is coming in.

Cheers,

RM

You say a barn, eh? A few years ago I did a session in the barn at Bearsville. They created a third studio out of the old barn that was on the property. Instead of eating up some of the space in the barn, they built an addition on the back which created the control room and an extra bathroom. The loft contains beds and a lounge as well as another bathroom. The place is very cool.

Cheers,

Carter William Humphrey
