hello
i am running a DAW as follows.
16 track Allen and Heath mixer, direct out to delta 1010, which then inputs into pci slot and finally the software cubase
everything works fine and sound decent, but the sound feels like it is missing something. the mixer has pres, but i was wondering if i bought some really expensive pres in addition if that would liven up the sound more
i was also considering outboard comps, b/c i doubt the cubase ones are that great
thanks!

I have a similar setup in my studio and so does my father in his - we both use the 1010. Both of us prefer using nice tube preamps, rather than using cheap mixer preamps - it usually sounds better.

I've got a Delta 44 and Soundcraft board.
In your case, the converters are probably the weak link. In my case, flip a coin. Regardless, I was thinking a converter upgrade would come before more pres or a new board for me. This at least makes a D/A, A/D conversion step a more reasonable proposition. Openning up the possibility of some outboard magic.
I've tried this with the 44 and the results we're largely unusable.

He would be referring to the INS and OUTS on the 1010 - the devices contained therin which make analog into digital and digital into analog.

I dissagree. While not leading edge, the 1010 converters are quite good. AHB pres have a very small window of usability, they sound decent in that window, but outside it they suffer badly. Better pre's will make a world of difference.

Hey, I'm currently using your setup(delta 1010). I recently upgraded my pres with an all tube pre(a designs mp-2). It made all the difference in presence and thickness(vox and synths). Since I've upgraded, I've been more pleased with the sound of my recordings period. Erosity.

True, I used 1010's until my upgrade last week. I was always happy - of course I was also using some decent preamps.

hey i checked out the a designs mp-2 pre...wow that is expensive. i think i will just have to settle and get the best sound i can out of the A&H board for now...since i do not have the funds for a bunch of pres
but i was considering buying just one or two pres to use for my guitar/bass and vox applications, b/c when it comes down to it i don't see what else i need a pre for, drums i'm happy with just through the A&H board.
i'm willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a nice pre, nothing like that a designs mp-2, that was just way to expensive...so any suggestions? thanks for the help!

thanks! One of the best investments I made for my set up was the Apogee Mini me. Excellent mic pre with above average converters. Blows doors on Digi's built in....Only cost me $1000 bucks. I'm running protools 002R so price is definitely an issue. Hope this helps.
