I'm headed there in a few days. Since there seem to be quite a few Paris lover's in the group...anyone like to give me some sightseeing advice. (Beside the usual Louvre, Orsay, Notre Dame, Versaille, etc.)
Thanks!

Bring good shoes. Walk a lot.
I love that city, that country.

Hi Kevin,
highlights for me would be Musee d'Orsay, the Quartier Latin, the Pompidou Centre (especially at night), shopping in les Halles. The best thing you can do is walk and walk especially at night, it is truly magical down by the water. The last time I was there my wife and I went to a different market every day food, clothes, junk whatever. I loved that as it brought us out to the suburbs and down all sorts of back streets away from the sights.
A lot of people complain that Paris is an expensive city and it certainly can be. Try to avoid the cafes on the main squares and near the metro exits for food and coffee, just pop around the corner and you'll pay several euros less. I hope to tie in a few days there after the AES in Berlin.
Enjoy it, cheers, Ruairi

I dug the Musee Rodin and Musee Picasso.
Dining-wise, there's an Italian restaurant in the 6th arrondissement called Alfredo Positano (on Rue Guisarde) that I *really* love. Made it a destination to hit for three subsequent visits now.
Depending on how much time you have to kill, a day-trip to Monet's gardens in Giverny can also be nice (April might be too early to hit it tho).

How disappointing when we walked up to it only to find a massive construction site.

I live there so as usual I'm the worst person to ask: I haven't climbed up the Tour Eiffel for the last 20 years... I agree with others on the "walking" side of things. As for interesting spots, you want to be at least in the following "quartiers": - Les Halles: Centre Pompidou (our MOMA) / Eglise Saint-Eustache (it boasts the best organ in town) - Le Marais: former Jewish ghetto, lots of old stones and cool places - the gay spot also - Ile de la Cité: Sainte-Chapelle - Ile Saint-Louis: nice old stones and quays, supposedly Berthillon there has the best ice cream in town - Quartier Latin: Saint-André-des Arts, l'Odéon, le jardin du Luxembourg, the Saint-Germain jazz scene is rather dead but some of the cheapo "caves" can be funny when stuffed with yelling students - L'Opéra Garnier: mostly ballet now - you must go there and look at the ceiling - Montmartre: get there at night, walk around, pray for clear horizons and then enjoy the sight from the hill - I probably forget a ton of other things
- for music, buy "l'Officiel des spectacles" or "Pariscope" (+/- 1$) and have a look at the concerts - easy way - for nightlife, try the 11th on Rue Oberkampf or Rue de Lappe near Bastille, tons of other spots but these are easy to find and filled with various places - if you need more info here's the email : saada dot alexis at wanadoo dot fr.
(edited to take out "lieux communs")

Find the museum that has Monet's Waterlilies on the walls. I think it's the "Orangerie", on one end of the Louvre.
Other than that, eat a lot, drink lots of wine, and be nice to everyone.

Catch a show and some local Jazz fare at the New Morning....the little restuarant across the street has some great cheap eats.
Just walking is incredibly entertaining in Paris...but watch where you step!!!!!
Taxis are very expensive during the daylight hours, but very ffordable at night, and the Metro(subway) is quite dangerous at night.

In 6 different week long trips to Paris in as many years I have never felt threatened or in danger on the Metro and I've travelled at all possible hours. I could have been lucky though. Pigalle station near Monte Martre isn't what I'd call pleasant but I still felt safe. Of course I would have had no cause to venture out into the suburbs which is where I would imagine things get a little hairier,

As with any big city, the subway is a gathering place of homeless, drugged and downand outs. While it's probably no worse than most any other big city, it is definitely something to be aware of. Parisians will tell you the same. I've been traveling Europe(and msot fo the free world, along with some of the not so free) for over 25 years, and have spent a particularly large amount of time in Paris. I have some very close friends there. A street wise person will be safer than your average toruist, but there is definitely a good element of danger in teh Paris undergorund after dark. that's one of the reasons why nighttime taxi fares are so much lower, to encourage people to use them instead of the metro to deter crime.
