The possible content for such a book is undoubtedly endless, from funny experiences with female vocalists to the piano being dropped on some poor guy's foot to the Hammond tone cabinet catching fire during a critical take. It could include cool stories of the "Soul of a New EQ," or room and recording tricks. It could manifest the most rigorous intellectual honesty on the current and past state-of-the-art or it could just pile on a little of the old bs. George could write it all by himself, or, he could dictate to it to ghostwriter. Naturally, he could refuse and deny the world of of something that could have lasting significance or he could say, "Help me find a publisher who is willing to give me a 'fair' advance."

So, here's the deal on the vote:

Vote "Yes" if you feel that the world would a enjoy a new book from GM.

Vote "No" if you believe this a dumb idea.

I've just now voted against my writing a new book. It would seem that there are so darn many books about recording it's time to give this a rest until we can say something really new. You know, like what happened with A/D converters...

GM,

Ok, maybe the timing is all wrong, it's just that as we get older, we sometimes forget stuff that would be good to pass on to the next generation and preserve for historical purposes. I should do this myself, if for no other reason to preserve stuff just for my own family and friends, I always find myself making excuses for not doing it, I hope you are better in this regard than I am. Somehow, I sense that your viewpoint could bring a fresh perspective on the potential wide array of topics you could choose to cover. Despite all the other books out there, I know I would buy any book or booklet YOU penned.

If you can't make it work, I'll just chalk it up to our temporary loss. Maybe you can re-visit this at some time in the future.

Oh, so now GM's getting old and senile? ;\) \:D

I'd love to see GM write a book soon, but OTOH, I think I'd rather he send his time on new gear and new records. But if he did write a book, I'd definitely buy it.

Phil, c'mon please don't put words in my mouth, I did not mean to imply anything negative, just that if you're like me, well, you forget stuff. See, I only have 2 brain cells left, and they ain't always talkin' to each other...Know what I mean? I need 2 hours and at least 2 cups of coffee every morning before anything starts workin, but then, I'm ready, least I think I'm ready. Could be lyin to myself though. ;\)

Johnny, all in good fun - I know you didn't mean it that way, but when I read it, I just couldn't resist. ;\)

C'mon Phil, I knew it was in fun, but there's a time and place to get your shots in at me. Here, on GMs forum, we should at least try to show a little respect. Doncha think?

Glad, you'd buy a GM-authored book or booklet though, I'm sure a lot of us would.

George, if you aren't going to write a new book would you give us a recommended reading list of books that you think are well written?

Thanks,

Nathan

Hmmm, I'd be interested in his music book reading list as well. I'll bet he has a bookself full of stuff. If you're like me, I sometimes find it's good to look at my old books, dust 'em off, and read 'em again. How many of us go back and read our music-related books?

Yes George if you can recommend a couple it would be great. Most recording books in the Sam Ash, and Gutiar Center stores are basic stuff.

while a book..where everything is eazy to look up would be something..I´d have to say if one take the time to search, and read this very forum..you nearly got the book written here..!!!

I mean it´s not well "spelled" out but there´s soo many hints as to what to do...look out for...how to address many different things in audio..I mean one can´t hardly expect not to be asked to do a little "homework" oneself..cant expect to get it all for free...

I have learned more by carefully searching, asking, reading this forum than i would ever learn IRL by any enginner around my hood. this and hard work will get the job done to some extend, but it there man...it all right under you nose..SEARCH and you´ll find..*S*

Kind regards

Peter

I have to give credit to Sound on Sound magazine myself. I created a 2 three ring books in my studio. I have sections on recording vocals, bass guitar, mixing, masterings, Eq, etc. and have downloaded some very good articles that go way beyond Recording 101. The articles are not just from the members of SOS but also from interview with engineers. Just go to their search icon and type in a area of recording you want info on.

The problem with getting info off the net is that 'everyone is an expert' whether they know what they are talking about or not. There is no way to verify the valitdity of a posters comments. It's hard to find out what info is good. The only info I trust off the net is when there is a recognizable name attached to it, like GM for example.

Kind regards

I have to think what most interesting as far as recording reading for gm must be very different than for many of the rest of us- I for one have nothing like the technical understanding, experience, etc., so what's news to me is probably not news to him...

Anyway, right now I'm reading Fundamentals of Hearing, and will be soon reading The Microphone Book and The Stereo Soundbook, all recommended to me by various far more knowledgeable (than myself!) people when I pestered them with various questions...

I see your point. But to clarify, the problem that I have is when advice that is given over the net by 'whoever' is completely incorrect. I've been suckered before and ended up wasting time on advice that was wrong. Luckily I had a knowledgable friend quickly correct me.

I have nothing against trying stuff out and experimenting. I do have a problem with wasting precious time (or money) based on advice given from an annonymous someone who does not know what they are talking about. I'd rather spend the time and cash on good advice / experiments that will actually get me somewhere.

Peace.

Nathan
