Also, what are you using for patching between the two rooms...cables, patchbays, etc?

I've heard that it's best to use short cable runs from mic's to pre's, and Hi-Z sources to DIs...but I've also read a little about conditioning these lines with things like stompboxes for example on guitar cables, etc.

Just curious because I may be buying a house soon and setting up things to be more sectioned off.

Thanks.

Mine are all in the control room, but I have a friend who puts the preamps without a bucn of contrls in the tracking room, and those iwth, (for example, the Vipre and any preamp with EQ controls) in the control room. That seems to work out very well for him.

I installed all the cables in the walls when I built my studio, if I'm not the talent, I put everything in the control room with me, but if I am the talent and the engineer, I put everything in the tracking room and just take my Remote 48 out there with me. I have KVM switches, so I can run a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to do the setups, and use the Remote 48 for transport controls.

Works well for me, but I really don't like clients to mess with the geer, unless it is their own, and even then once they get what they like I ask them to not touch it after we have started tracking.

Can anyone recommend a good XLR and 1/4" patch box that you can mount in the wall? I've been looking around, but I haven't been able to find any.

Thanks.

Why not build one? There are a number of places advertised int he back of Pro Sound News who build aluminum panels; Order one for each side of the wall, then solder the cabling between the tow yourself. Or, if you're like me, hire someone to solder them.
