Saw this in a magazine ad, and checked it out a little. Looks like a really cool front end for a PC-based DAW. Got a friend who wants me to build him a DAW system, and thought I'd ask here before I recommended it to him. Anyone messed with one of these? How do the onboard pres sound? How's the automation and interfacing? Granted, for $1300, it's not going to be top-of-the-line, but if the functionality is good and the sound is better than, say, a Mackie, then it will work for his application.

Griff, I've had one since it came out, but I'm using it on a Mac so I don't know how it performs in a PC environment.

The automation is great, the pres are surprisingly clean and clear sounding and the coverters are better than I expected. Yes, you're getting what you pay for and it's not going to compete with a Cranesong Spider for pres or converters, but it's definitely a quality piece of gear.

Oh, believe me - I'm not even expecting Yamaha O2x level performance out of it - just something that sounds reasonably good and does what it's primarily advertised to do (interface seamlessly with the DAW) well.

I also like the expandability thing - that's a big bonus, in my book. If he wants to strap on another bank of 8 channels, he can, with little hassle.

You know that the expanders are only faders, buttons and encoders, not additional input channels, right?

Wow - and they cost just as much as the original unit? That sucks. I can't hardly justify it with that in mind. If they were more reasonably priced (say @ $700) I could probably convince myself (and him) to go for it. But $1200 to add 8 more interface controls, without the additional inputs? No thanks.
