My PT system has gone completely haywire and I can't figure out how to fix it.

All my sessions are missing half or more of their audio regions (on a VERY important project). When I play the sessions, this horrible stuttering sound comes out, as if the remaining audio is all screwed up.

I tested the audio drives and they're FINE. It's definitely the PT software, or the hardware, or both, that's gotten all screwey.

And Digidesign will not pick up their service help lines. AAARRRGGGHHH!

Has this happened to anybody? Do you know what's going on or how to fix it?

Sorry to hear that Curve.

I'd start with three things:

A reboot. If that doesn't cure things...

Turn off the Mac and remove / reinsert the PCI card.

Uninstall and reinstall the PT software.

Then restore from your backups (PLEASE tell me you have been dilligent about doing backups...) and see if things improve.

Have you checked the audio files folder for the songs to see if the actual files are in there but just not showing up in the session? If they are indeed "there" (but not in the session) you can inport them back into the session - using spot mode will get them back to the proper locations - it will tell you the original location of the AIF (or WAV) file, and then you just type in the same "spot" (minutes / seconds / subdivisions) as the one indicated for the waveform to be placed back into its original location.

Hope it works out for you.

I haven't had this problem. This is a shot in the dark but when's the last time you reformatted your hard drives? Maybe your data is fragmented.

I'm probably not any help. I hope you work it out.

Hmmm, maybe you should go analog. ProTools is pretty seductive until something like this happens...

Curve, first things first- PC or Mac? Also, did you try restoring your sytem to an earlier date, when you KNOW that everything was running fine?

Oh, the irony.....

Ok. if it's happenig on the back-ups, then my first guess would be a flaky drive.

If you have any other CPU intensive prgrams, run them to see how they work, to eliminate a bad motherboard, bad CPU or bad ram.

Then, double check to make sure all your drive cables are secure and haven't come loose.

And then se if you can borroug another drive, and run the files form that.

The drive is fine. All my Photoshop, GoLive, QuarkXpress... all that stuff is still working perfectly.

I even checked my Quicktime file of a pretty brunette taking her clothes off, and it plays beautifully.

The DSL connection is still working fine.

Triple-checked the PT extensions list, no conflicts.

Disconnected and reconnected everything from the Digi cable to the FW drives, and even blew all the dust out of the G3.

Everything checks out fine - except the Digi stuff. Anything related to Digi and PT is just fucked.

Maybe Pro Tools DOES suck...

Gotta go, I got a client coming in and I have absolutely NO idea what to tell her.

The same even big studio's tell their clients in a case like this: "sorry, technical problem. we'll have to reschedule".

Maybe you can find soem with an LE system to open it up on their system.

Or, try downloading PT's free and see hwat happens when you open the session in it.

Could you give us a complete run down of all components in your system.. which Digi hardware.. how much RAM, which OS, which Mac... have you trashed your prefs, have you checked the clock is set to Internal?

What kind of drives are you using, have you tried DiskWarrior on them yet?

Sounds like your session files may be hosed. Are you able to load other projects and they're OK? Or are ALL your PT sessions doing this?

Check to see if the actual audio files are still there. Assuming they are, you should be able to open a new session, import the audio files into it, and play them OK.

I would also defragment the hard drive if you haven't done so very recently.

A couple of other thoughts: it's NOT a good idea to run PT on the same computer where you do your Internet surfing and other general computing stuff. You should have a separate computer specifically for audio, with at least two hard drives - one for your applications and one for the audio and session data.

Rail,

I triple-checked all that stuff.

It's definitely the Pro Tools stuff that's gone haywire.

Are you using OS9 or OSX?

If you're using OS9, definitely trash all your Digi applications files.Trahs the extensions, the preferences, the DAE folder and the application folder. Then reinstall.

If that doesn't work try:
Save Session copy in

Then open that Pro Tools file.

If that doesn't work do a "Clean Install' of the OS and reinstall the ProTools application.

I don't use OS X for Pro Tools yet.

Uh.. perhaps if you care to share all the details I asked about your system.. we could give you some more things to check/test. The Pro Tools app isn't going to suddenly stop working unless there's a harware failure.. to isolate that, we need to know system details.

All you've told us is a description of the problem.. but nothing about your system hardware.

another outside possibility....just beause a drive tests ok, doesn't mean all the files are good (especially if you had a crash while in the middle of something). if you have Disk Warrior (i hate Norton stuff generally) you might try it...though it doesn't really make sense.

Curve, you might want to search the DUC for some answers... there's been a lot of posts on "missing files" - a couple of examples:

http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.php?C...&Main=581178&Se arch=true#Post582654

http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.php?C...&Main=564184&Se arch=true#Post564238

You shouldn't do ANY recording or anything other than searching the drive(s) on that computer until you resolve this. You might be able to use something like Disk Warrior or a similar utility to recover the files - assuming they were actually deleted somehow. But if you write anything to the drive you may write over the sectors onthe HDD where your files were at - making recovery completely impossible.

Anyway, knowing what version of PT you're using, what drive(s), which computer - how much RAM, etc. etc. is going to possibly help everyone help you, so please list that as soon as you can.

Did you by chance mount or unmount any hard drives with Protools open? I have had enormous problems because of that with SCSI but luckily none yet with firewire. I wouldn't be too surprised though to see some.

Definitely go and look in the audio files folder for each song and see if it looks like all your files are there. Then just make a new session and import them in like they said earlier. Spot will work for you but not if you are using .AIFF file format.

I have had corrupt session files often enough to have to do that tactic of just importing the audio into a new session. Sometimes you have to actually import all the audio to new tracks but sometimes if you're lucky you can just do an import track function if it will let you open the "possibly" corrupt session file.

Another thing that has happened to me before was when burning a small session to CDR for backup, I also dragged the folder onto another firewire drive as a second backup, while it was burning! Lesson learned there!! It corrupted the session file on my original drive, the CDR AND the backup firewire drive. Luckily the audio was all intact so all I had to do was make a new session and import it all in.

You would be surprised though how many times just trashing all your digi preferences and that stupid digi setup file will help.

Hope some of this helps!! The more info you post up the more help everyone can be!!

-Greg
