hi , my wife is soon to engage with a small jazz quintet (vocals , trumpet, keys , drums and double bass). I'm hoping to be able to record their rehersals and use it as a demo for gigs.

Now , I can not record in my studio (as it is not ment for big live recording) but I have a pretty decent live room I can use. I'm hoping to be able to record this using only a stereo mic (so no vocals mic) those are few of the best jazz musicians in belgium so I think they can play off eachother without any amplification.

Any suggestions , thought or remarks?

thanks

Danny

Well, I'd start with a space sufficient to give you suitable 4 (or 5) channel imaging. Which is to say that I'm definitely doing serious music in multichannel from now on. I would probably use touch-up mics, unless every musician were known to be capable of working flexibly with a situation where they might have to vary their dynamics to suit the situation, if not the song.

I'd look at using a pair of figure 8 condensors in the Blumlien array. Crossed at 90 degrees, one inverted over the other. This gives a great stereo image and a lot of openness in the room. I've had good luck with AT 4050s for this.
