I own, and use, 2 DBX 160's. Like 'em on vocals & BG vox. If you use around 4-5 dB of compression, they're pretty unobtrusive. FWIW, I like to use them post-fader.

If you are talking about the 160VU models. They are great on BG vocals. Excellent on snare, kick. Sound real good on electric guitar. On Acoustic guitar they can sound very nice if used the right way.

a '57 into a 160x gets an awfull lot of snare drums. and another vote for bass as well.
