Hi, I am currently running a thread on another site:

[URL=http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=13261[/URL]

I appologise in advance for dual posting.

I thought I might stop here and ask if those using PTHD Plugs could advise what plugs they feel are very strong and are a "must" for clients I may have?

I am seeking only the best quality or the most common--so common a client would look at me funny if I didnt have it??

I have been an analog proponant for years, and am trying now to make a commercial digital decision.

Thank you very kindly,

Kurt T.

Hi Kurt,

not sure if you want the plug sugestions here or on the other thread but I'll post here.

Just to let you know, I do not run a commercial facility with visiting engineers, I am the only engineer in my studio. I mix in the box on PT HD3 so my comments are based on things I find essential rather than features visiting engineers may demand or expect.

MDW eq (the best plug in eq I've heard)
Sony Oxford eq (very good eq, less processor intensive than the MDW)
Sony Dynamics (the best plug in compressor limiter I've heard)
Altiverb (amazing reverb plugin - CPU hog)
Amp Farm
Pitch Correction plug (I use Soundtoys Pitchdoctor and control it manually, obviously Autotune is the industry standard)
Waves Platinum Bundle (I mainly use the L2, Supertap, De esser and the mastering LMB and Lin Eq - there's a lot of junk in the bundle but it is a kind of industry standard)
Pitchblender (amazing sonic mangler-I find it inspirational)

I guess that you will need the ability to open PT sessions brought in by engineers so you will need to cover a pretty broad base of plugs. Personally i am trying to steer away from buying plugs and concentrate on better analog hardware (compressors, pres, mics etc).

Hope this helps some, if you need more specific info let me know,

cheers,
Ruairi

I couldn't agree more :-)

Thank you, that looks like a very good list.

This is like the 10th time I have had folks suggest TDM Altiverb. That is a definate add! Thanks. I hope it is good.

Reverbs have me worried a lot. I can barely stand the usual Lexicon stuff, and fantasize that some day I will have a real stone live room :-) The couple times I got to use them, I was in heaven.

Compression is an even bigger worry. I just hate comp plugs. God, I wish George would make a comp plug.

Thank you very much for replying.

Hey Ptuzer why do you think that waves IR-1 blows away Altiverb.Do you think that IR-1 sounds better or you just have more settings!?

I have both. IR-1 has more detail in the sound. Plus more control You can set your reverb time say to 1.2 seconds then go between different rooms and the reverb time stays the same. This is just on of the great features. The reverb samples all sound so good it's sometime hard to decide which one to use. Aliverb is a little unstable as well.

In these very early experiences with IR-1 I can honestly say that I think it's a terrific tool, and that many of the impulse responses provided (particularly the Jam Sync ones, and in particular the "Florida Room" from which you can fashion a believeable "early-Motown" reverb) are splendid - dense, and bright.

I did have a small problem with a big sample while playing around at 96kHz on a 733 G4-based PT6.3.2. One hour before a live tracking date my main SCSI hard drive was inexplicably trashed. For the moment I attribute this to the IR-1 stealing too much CPU and perhaps to OS 10.2.8 in turn doing something strange & lethal to the SCSI chain. This is not the first time I've lost a disk under PT, and I'm almost never very well backed up.

Admittedly, I want very much to like the IR-1 now that Sony has abandoned the 777, so I'm a little shy of objective.

George

George
This is sad to hear. I had the same problem when I used scsi barracudas with protools in the past.
I lost in a year 3 of them.

With your story I begin to believe that it has something to do with protools.

b.t.w. George, I bought a maxtor firewire backup disk to avoid this kind of frustrations.
