ANyone know of any private/public foundations which provide partial funding to allow disabled children to begin/continue music education?
A keyboardist/close friend is also a music teacher in the local school districts...he was telling me about a young talented girl who is rapidly going blind, but wants to continue music...the district is extremely limited in its ability to provide private tutors, and the girl's family is financially unable to provide.
Any information/leads will be given directly to the girl's family and the music teacher...I'm just trying to find as many resources as possible...
Thanks for your time.
Ken

Hi Ken,
I don't know of any private foundations offering funding for this but you might want to steer the parents to this website . This is the best resource for information about legal rights for children with disabilities.
In my experience this child should be able to receive services under IDEA, Section 504 or ADA. It's doubtlful that she'd be able to get a private music tutor but if there is a music therapist in the school district she may be able to lobby for those services and essentially get the same end result.
If the family wants to apply for services under these acts, they're in for a long, hard battle but it may be worth it for them.
Good luck,
Jeff

Good luck, Ken!
Could be the answer is to find a private teacher into doing some pro bono work.

Update...
We've been in close contact with the local Lighthouse for the Blind, and may be on the way to a solution...Also, being a member of NARAS, I have contacted them for any resourse assistance.
We've also come up with a possible project to record a music educator's concert, with all proceeds going to cover the cost of special need students in music education.
Thank you for your assistance! Things really are looking better for this student.

Hey Ken,
You might try setting an informal path for this kind of thing by looking for some retired music teachers. Ex band or choir directors usually love their work and miss the interaction with the students. My Father, who is a retired Music Supervisor in Irving, TX does a mentor program with the new teachers in his old school district. If a situation like yours was brought up to him, I wouldn't be surprised to hear him taking it. Of course, not all retired teachrs would want to be involved, but some would. Contact the Midland School district's Music Supervisor and explain the situation. They would be a good resource. It's not as formal as a paying gig, but I'd be the rewards would be great.
