Is there any laptop within 1000 - 1500 USD which behaves in a civilised way as regards fans ? So far I have Acer TravelMate and it at times sounds like a vacuum cleaner. COuld you recommend a laptop which is more or less quiet or only decently noisy and thus suitable for mobile recordings ?

Apple's iBooks are super quiet and now have G4s, I don't think they even have a fan.

Well, whatever you buy, make sure that it works with your audio rig. I've been looking at the Tecra M2 with 1.7 processor, 1 gig ram, 2 PC slots, and a 60 gig 7200 RPM hard drive, 14 inch display, DVD burner, 5 pounds. But if it has certain PC controller chips, it will not work with my RME PC card. (I'm waiting for an answer from their tech support...) I've been happy with my Asus M2400, but the new (faster processor) version uses and incompatable PC controller chip, so I cannot suggest it to you.

hey ivo - i am using an IBM T40, centrino 1.5ghz, ati 9000 w/32mb video ram. super machine, great build quality, and very quiet, but HDD is only 5400rpm. also, no firewire, but does have usb 2.0, which is faster than firewire. however, i have a dell d800 (like the 8600) that has a wonderful 15.4" wxga display and 64mb video ram with geforce card - also a great machine, but noisier than the ibm. the latest i am hearing, though, is, believe it or not, an Emachines laptop that uses the new athlon 64-bit cpu - supposedly rock solid and fast as all get out.

jnorman - i run a T20 IBM and I agree with you on build. But you really should check out the MX517 at Michaels Puters.
http://www.michaelscomputers.com/MX517.html

it has 7200rpm drives, 1 gig ram, 3.2gig P4, firewire, usb2, 128meg video to a full 17" LCD. AND it's super quiet. ;\) ;\)

cheers

I bought Acer Aspire 2003WLMi (Centrino 1.6, 15.4 megawide screen, DVD-RW etc.) and I am extremely happy with it. I like it much more than PowerBook (for half price). And before all - it is absolutely DEAD SILENT, even after 20 hours of continuous use, even after 2 hours of DVD film... no fans, nothing. Such a great relief after the vacuum cleaner PowerBook ... It does not stop to amaze me - I love to listen to this silent run :-)
Two days ago I also got a specially constructed P4 3GHz PC. If I make two steps back, I am not sure - is it on or off ?
Good bye noisy and costly Apple ...
