Hi GM,

About this page on your GML website:

http://www.massenburg.com/cgi-bin/ml/tracking_mics.html

Is that still what you are usually doing with drums? I was particularly curious about the use of the 414's on toms.

Thanks,

Kurt T.

414's are awesome on toms. they crrdiod and hypercsardiod patterns are tight enough so the mics can safely be placed out of harms way without sacrificing quality. they produce a rich, phat sound, with crisp attack yet minimal cymbal bleed. My first choice on toms for sure.

414s are very good, but C-12As are gorgeous on toms. You do need to explain very clearly to the drummer that hitting the microphone is not okay.

Cheers,

YES! C12-A's are awesome on toms.
since I don't have them though, I use the old 414's quite a bit. I don't know why more people don't use them on toms.
They almost always beat out the 421 or 57.
Right now i'm using a 421 on high tom and 414 on low tom.
sounds great.
For a mic I used to hate, the 414's sure see a lot of work on my sessions.
They are my main overheads as well.

You can hit those 421's for days with no problems, and replace it for under $300. A 414 gets hit once and it'd done, and about 3x the cost.

Which 414 is everyone referring to? There are several "vintages" and models. I have a 414TLII. Would the freq. response curve of this mic work as a tom or overhead option (bought it primarily for voice). Thanks

I always felt the 414 to be an overhead unit, as far as drums, though I no longer use them. It can be a very interesting vocal mic, in the vintage version. The current transformerless version is almost useless, IMO.

The BULS, which it seems GM is using on toms in those pics, seems an odd choice to me, since they do not feature much low end, though I have no tried it. I plan to experiment a bit with it, since they do (physically) sit rather nicely above the toms.

Will post more if I learn anything of interest.

The C414B-ULS has a massive amount of low end for a close mic'd tom with the HP filter off, or even in the 75hz position for smaller toms, capturing the meat of the drum while filtering out any unwanted rumble. The transparant high end allows for a clear, present stick attack, and the tight pattern keeps cymbla bleed to a minimum.

You know, my favorite mic on toms is probably the Sony C-37A. Now, talk about bright...and a really nice overload thing...

But then again when a drummer hits one (as he/she invariably will) you have to eat an irreplaceable vintage microphone. This is a problem...

Wonder why someone hasn't built an adjustable 'cage' that fits to mics and protects them from drummers?

I tried that once. I made this crazy contraption out of a colander and a coathanger. \:D It took up too much space though, so now I use semi-expendable mics like Octavas on snare and toms.

I'd like to try boundary mics on snare and toms. Seriously. Drill a hole in a small piece of plywood, and insert a small-diaphragm condenser. The plywood blocks the cymbal bleed and protects the mic from the drumsticks.

Believe it or not, back in the days of when I was an assistant, the studio I worked in regularly used Telefunken 251s on toms. (they have seven of these babies)

That is, they were used until Tico Torres whacked one and separated the top capsule cage from the rest of the mic. Thankfully it wasn't too badly dented and worked after I put it back together.

After that the owner would only use them on the late, great Jeff Porcaro. His playing was so good, he never hit anything.

I too love the sound of 414s on the toms.

The trouble is, I have to take them off of overhead duty in order to cover the toms and very often they are my favorite overhead mic as well.

I've never hit one or had a client hit one in 20 years. How out of control does a drummer have to be to miss the drum past the far rim?

On the other hand, I have whacked my share of overhead mics- hit one just last month. Of course that is at the top of the upstroke so its really pretty much of a tap.

Give the A-T 4040s a shot as overheads. $600 for the pair. Move your 414s back to the toms.

I like the 4040s better than 414s as overheads.

Or if there's a bit mroe in your budget, check out a Shure VP-88 as an overhead. It's been my first choice for years now. Ive' tried others, including newer stereo mics, as well as a vast variety fo LD and SD condensors, but for me nothing gives me the sound I'm looking for like this mic. It's big, phat, not overly bright yet very present. Placed over the drummers head and out fo stick range, it is magical.
