Anybody know anything about Jacquire King or Tom Waits? You never know who will show up here.

I've been listening to "Mule Variations" for about 6 months now and liking it more every time. The engineering is awesome and the orchestration is absolutely unique. I'm going to have to go back to old Waits stuff and listen with a new ear.

Has Jacquire King worked on other projects that turned out so well?

I realy like How Tom Waits sound.. espacialy Mule Variation.. If you like it, maybe you would enjoy Jon Spencer Blues Explosion...

http://www.artistdirect.com/store/artist/album/0,,370710,00.html

Like Tom Waits, its not at fhe first listening that I was enjoying it. But now I found some unusual album that are made by genius. Not accecible to everybody, but richfull and mass of inspiration.

I like the way how compressor is use... Almost all the time you ear the pumping FX on the cimbals, and the drum sound real dirty.... they take the equipment as instrument to shape the sound.. and not in a traditional way. More I listen to it, more I enjoy it

Almost forgot about this CD,one of my favorites from Tom.At the time though,I didn't disect the recording quality one way or the other,it just seemed natural and right.Time to re-visit and listen to it from another perspective.I hope it doesn't ruin my memory. \:D

Mule Variations is one of my sonic benchmarks - a wonderful sound. Tom Waits has been an enormous influence of mine over three decades, for performance, songwriting and production. Now if only this was the sort of American culture that was being promoted throughout the world, instead of McBritneycola.......

My Favs are Rain Dogs and Bone Machine, both of which favor that "Anthropological Field Recording" he's been shooting for for quite a while.

He just cribbed that all from Emily Dickinson...

Well, er... not.

Tom's one o' my heroes, along with Pharaoh Sanders and Hector Berlioz.

I had a friend once upon a time who Tom still owed $20 to, don't know whether he's paid up yet, but that was a long time ago.

Hey Max -

do us all a favor and fold that long-ass URL into a UBB URL link would ya? Keeps the thread from being a mile wide.

jacquire was a studio cohort of eric valentine (smashmouth, 3rd eye blind, good charlotte, etc). and worked with him in the bay area. a few years ago eric moved to LA and opened a studio, jacquire is now in nashville.

And if you can find it check out "Bigtime", his concert feature film. I had a lot of friends (and girlfriend) that would make me take off his music UNTIL they saw him perform. The film is cut together from several nights at the Wiltern (LA, CA) and somewhere else but apparently each night he presented the material in entirely different ways visually and then edited each song together from the different performances, a multimedia caberet if you will. The band nails the "field sound" mentioned, also a kind of unintended? homage to Harry Partch and his musical instruments/vision. Well, why not, they were both hobo's at one time.

thanks. good to meet you as well!

yes, i've been living in the nashvile area for the last few
years. i've worked some there as well as traveling around.
the new modest mouse album that comes out this week
is something i recorded and mixed last summer. i feel
good about that one, as well as a jars of clay album and
the buddy guy acoustic record, blues singer (grammy!).

i'm currently recording and mixing in LA on some records
with ethan johns. i'm thinking about going back out west
to live and work.

the drum sounds on tom's recordings are a combination
of the standard micing of drums, ambient mics, a boombox
in front of the drums as a mic, and an unusual recording
space. another fact about recording drums with tom is he
isn't a fan of cymbals or hi-hats. they don't make it into
the track very often. lots of interesting percussion though.

peace!

Jacquire,
So nice to see you here.
Great work on the TW & Buddy Guy records. Got a chance to hear the Buddy Guy on an audiophile system at a friend's shop, really fine sounding CD.

My 6 year old son has been back on a "Bone Machine"/"Mule Variations" diet for the last month & 1/2. Actually "Mule Variations" was playing when I came across this topic. All I can say is after hearing them over & over I like both records even more than before, & I loved them to begin with.

Thanks for the wonderful recordings.

Marty

wow Marty, that's one musically literate kid. I've used Fillipino Box Spring Hog to scare friends of mine, it gives me a kick to think of a 6 year old humming along without preconceptions. Come to think of it I made a record recently that I was quite proud of and my 4 year old nephew listens to it non stop.

Raindogs is a truly amazing album, it's definitely tied with Mule Variations as my favourite and I have most all of Tom Waits music. Yes I think Raindogs would make a fine seventh birthday gift \:\)

cheers,
Ruairi

We've got Rain Dogs, actually have most all of Tom's work except for his very first recording.
Yeah, the kid is quite discriminating in his musical tastes, an ardent fan of Monk, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, pretty much all stuff we can enjoy. Lately it's been traditional Brazillian & Andean Quena/Quenacha music. Saturday he asked for more Teleman & we found the perfect CD for him, Trumpet concertos ........ Teleman & trumpets. Takes me back to when before he could walk he would hold himself up at the opening of Kind of Blue chanting, "Here comes the trumpet, here comes the trumpet." until Miles entered the arrangement.

I am a friend of Jacquire's and I must say that he is one of the best people that I have ever met. Not to mention an amazing recording/mix engineer. I will miss him if he goes to the land of swimming pools and movie stars. So please everyone try to talk him out of it. Ok?
BTW Check out "who we are instead" by Jars of Clay...great organic sounds...like a band playing in a room with you in it... except quieter...and better...and stuff....
I mow my grass to it....
