Hey gear junkies
Everyone who owns either of these pres speaks about them in awed tones like religious converts! I'm sure they ain't lying and I suspect I can't go far wrtong with either but has anybody actually had a chance to AB these two? I normally never buy stuff blind but I'm in a hurry...
could the transformer option on the Buzz swing it?
They'll be used mostly for vocals and percussion with elux251, u99, tlm170 and M147 mics

I haven't tried a Buzz yet but there's one on the way. We have a DACS here along with about 30 other mic pres. The DACS Clarity came in a few weeks ago and I have to say I am floored by the clarity and detail this mic amp gives.
We ran some 451's in XY on OH's and the DACS picked up more detail than any other pre. You could actually hear the individual snares.
I would describe the sonics of the DACS as having the character of a Martech or Millennia with the punch of API.

Hi Dot,
Long time no speak.
Go easy with me, cuz I'm a little slow, and certainly not one of the sharper blades around here...
Which is more telling, recording music, or recording tones (and/or a combination of tones) to see how each mic captures that tone?
For example, a mic set to record a bunch of different freq from sub thru supersonic, and see how they do?

I've ordered the MA2.2 with the transformer option. I think I'll try to check it against the DACs before I decide to keep it if DACS will send me one. I'll post my impressions here if I do it
I'm sure I'll want them both!

The MA2.2 with the Manley Ref Card or Gold is to die for...., best vocal sound I ever recorded.
Thanks, Ted.

Richard You'll love it. This is exactly the same unit I have, and it's simply lovely. So clean and detailed, but not cold or clinical.
FWIW...Tim makes a rack system that will hold up to nine of these preamps, too, which I just bought. Well, I bought eight channels (didn't need the ninth). Unbelievable piece of gear. You can buy it without it being loaded up, and add as you need to.

If you're even remotely handy with a soldering iron, it's an easy mod. I got my MA2.2 without the Sowter mod, and added it later. I am very happy both with the preamp and with Buzz Audio as a company. Quality folks.

You do not need to send it back and it's fairly easy, some soldering is required on the output XLR's, but the instructions are clear. You do still have access to the direct out via the jack socket when the TX's are fitted. Send us an email if you wish to get hold of a kit.
