That's precisely the beauty of the home studio. You don't HAVE to get it right, but if you do, so much the better. I take advantage of the fact that the record light is on by trying out different things so I can listen back and hear what they really sound like. And composite vocals...say what you will, for me the concept works really well. It's not so much that I cut and paste among different versions; it's more like I just keep recording, and by the 3rd track or so, I'm feeling pretty relaxed.

Bottom line: Don't worry about it. It's 2001, and we have the technology

How do you guys (and gals) deal with the pressure of knowing you're being recorded? What tricks do you play with your mind to keep yourself relaxed when the red light is on?

Do about 9700 takes.

Seriously. You know how you get into a "groove" with your drumming - you can get that way with successive takes, too. Just do the damned song over and over again - without stopping if you want - until you're so zoned out and you've done it so many times you don't care if the red light is on or not. Believe it or not you can get REALLY creative and inspired at those times.

Also, start getting in the habit of recording EVERYTHING you do, even if you're "just practicing". Again, eventually you get conditioned to ignore whether or not the light is on. Don't even listen back to it if you don't feel like it. But just record everything, so you could listen back if you wanted to.

It's all about what you're in the habit of doing! If you do something all the time, you will get comfortable with it.

It's very simple, really. Just hit record before you start playing ANYTHING - EVERY time. I started that habit after coming up with some really brilliant stuff, then not being able to repeat it with tape running. My weapon of choice is an old Vestax HD recorder. It has the added advantage of letting you give a critical listen to your practicing while you're not caught up in it. I also roll tape, or HD, whenever there's somebody else in the studio - even if they're just "working something out" or rehearsing. Sometimes the rehearsal take is better than the "real" ones. It's worth the few extra seconds it takes to start recording before you play - you never know what will happen.

I just got back from a night in the studio. I was expecting a terrifying experience...as it was my night to have my ass in the sling. Hey...our engineer is a really nice, easygoing (and professional) chap...makes me feel right at home. Actually, if I was a bit nervous, it didn't hinder me much as (like Lee said) I planned on doing a whole bunch of takes...so anything less was a nice surprise.

S Gould has it, too...record everything.

If you are alone, just ignore the light, you can't be possibly "embarrassing yourself" can you? You always have "Rewind/Erase".

My mistake is sometimes NOT turning on the recorder while warming up. I've pissed away some great playing because of that.

I can understand the pressure if there are other people there...especially strangers...you feel like you HAVE TO get it right during the first pass.

Also, if there was no way for you to go back and edit/copy/paste...after you were done, then there might be some pressure, but I can't think of anything other than a "live" performance where that situation exists these days...you can slice-n-dice into oblivion. If you're using tape...just rewind.

Roll one...

I hear ya pops - that one gets me too. I'm in the same boat: lots of live work that went over without a bad note, but as soon as I know it's in record mode, I falter.

I actually find the DIY approach harder than doing it with someone else engineering. When someone else is hitting Record, I don't know when they're doing it during warmup and those turn out to be the best takes 90% of the time.
