Dear George, I've had a few bad experiences with singers I'm producing and their voice teachers, in that while I'm making the record we worked on in pre-production, they continue to work with the coach. When it's time to do the vocals they will sing something SO different. When I ask, "What's that?" their response is, "Oh, my voice teacher doesn't think I sound good on that note!!". My response is,"It's THE MELODY". And, what if they want the coach to come to the session? For that matter, my newest dilema is "My girlfriend has been coaching me and I would like for her to be there when I sing". I said, "That's why you have a producer". It's about more than just singing. Mic choice, direction in how loud or soft to sing, RECORD MAKING. Any thoughts? Thanks so much. Benjy

No, No! That's another thing all together. In the 80's when the male rock, 'Lou Gramm', singers abounded we had a great coach who would come in to help them with 'placement' in order to hit those high D's full voice. I'm talkin' way down the totum pole from that. More inexperienced singers. Benjy

I have a suggestion. Tell you stupid singer to put on a Michael Jackson Record and study his phrasing.
Sounds like your singer is not ready to make a record if all that is involved in your sessions!
I took voice in college, have a whole family of singers I even met Pavoroti and I can tell you other than breathing and diction the rest is innapplicable to Pop singing.
Glad I'm not the producer cause I'd get pissed. Tell you girlfriend she can come to the session but only if she sleeps with you afterward!
IT's ALL ABOUT PHRASING!!!!!!!!!!

Something that I have seen is a guy in a band or girl in a band go and take voice lessions for a few months. They come back to the studio and sound as good as when they started the voice lessions. They may have better control but the pitch thing is still lacking. So my question is how can a voice coach help in pop music or rock. I am sure that in some cases they can help but in the 10 or so that I have seen I don't know?jonathan
