I have a session coming up with a jazz trio that features bass, piano, and flute. I plan on having all the musicians in the same room for the session. My question is about how I should mic the flute player. I plan on probably using two mics on the flute, one near the embochure (spelling?) and one off axis with the end. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks for your time!

Sincerely,

Jason J

On flute I've always started with one mic at one end of an equalateral triangle which has one corner at the mouthpiece and the other at the open end.

I'd strongly suggest against using two mics on any instrument where you are likely to have the mics closer to each other than they are to the source. Frequency aberations will kill you.

I love C-12 (and other 1"-ish diaphrams) on flutes and woodwinds in general. I once used a ribbon mic on Herbie Mann. It lasted exactly on verse until he blew directly into it.

Thanks for the ideas! I haven't totally figured it out but now I have a start. Unfortunately I don't have any C-12s at my disposal but I'll look for something that comes close. Thanks again for the reply and the story.
