I may be getting a bit too obsessive - However, Ive been thinking that it would be really useful to have dynamic/real time spectral analysis/display capability. This would allow me to compare my mixes to some of the best stuff out there. Ive found that getting the stuff below 200Hz (and all the way down to 20 ish) to be well balanced/EQ'd is a real challenge- especially given the limitations of my near field monitoring.

Yet I dont often hear of folks using such analyser tools.

Are there any that anyone would recommend. Any shareware?
Anyone out there with experience using them in this way?

Cheers,
Ken

Dear Ken,

Over the years, I've tried on occasion to us a spectral analyer to get a sense of musical balance. It just never works for me.

Take the case where you e.q. something you're doing to match the displayed spectral characteristics of a reference recording, and you happen to match it up pretty well. Then I listen to it. It sucks. Case closed.

Your mileage may vary.
