Hi I've allways really liked your work. I was wondering if I mic a kick with a lets say sm57 near the beater and a re 20 near the front of the kik. What eq would you use on the 57 and the re 20. Also lets say I taped 5 cents to the beater and have a thick pillow in the kick to get the slap and a tight sound. any input would be great thanx

Dear Jonathan,

I don't use much e.q. on kick, but let me start at the beginning...

I invariably use two mics on kick, a U47fet and a D112 - I think I can get everything I need with these and only these. I move them around alot depending on the drum (usually the D112 is closer to the beater head, sometimes inside the drum), and almost always have a goose-down feather pillow at the ready in case a drummer has a fucked-up packing blanket or towels instead of something serious inside the drum. Also, I'll spend considerable time choosing (with the drummer) how much the pillow is pushing against the beater head; i.e., how 'dead' the drum is. If the drummer doesn't have good, somewhat new heads I'll buy them, or send a second out for them. If the drummer doesn't know how to tune drums, I do, and will. If the drummer has too-big of a hole in the front head, or the hole is in the wrong place, or he doesn't have a front head, I'll correct that.

The D112 gets the punch - the U47fet gets the size, and balancing between them you have a wide rance of sounds to pick from. Most of the time, I use a little notch on the fundamental and shelf up 8-10k.
