George,
What are your favorite preamps and for which instruments? I bet you are partial to your own GML design (and for good reason--it's amazing sounding), but what others do you have and reach for in other situations?

Hi Lynn,
I have basically three pre-amps that I use: my own (8300's), Doug Sax's Mastering Lab Preamp, and the Millenia Media HV-3.
On odd occasions I'll use whatever is at hand, from the horrible preamps in modern (V & VR, SSL 4000) boards, to the pres in O2R's, to Dave Derr's Derr-T Box (really good sounding goosh).
In general, I do not look to my basic pre-amps to do magic, just to be transparent.

Then another question.
If you are comparing pre's, do you take their outputs and go through the console and switch between them or do you take them straight to tape and compare on playback? I am trying to figure out the best method of comparing one to another.
For years, I have taken the mic and plugged it into a preamp and then recorded that, then plugged in the same mic to the next and recorded that. Usually by the time I've heard each once, I've made up my mind.
Someone recently questioned my going through the console and the coloration that might impart, but I figure that everything will eventually go through the console anyway and as long as each goes through the same path, then the comparison is still valid.

Dear Lynn,
I guess I'd initially do it the same way: listen to two tracks with independent chains.
Overall, I get a sense of a given technology by "throwing it in the river" so to speak; using one micpre (or eq, or compressor) on *everything* on a given record, and then coming back and listening to it a year later. How the unit "performs" also has something to do with how I repond to *it* at the time...what I reach for (perhaps unconciously) while working.
Of course, this takes up the better part of a lifetime to sort out what one likes.
