Well I know both are fantastic mic's. The question is what sound differences are there between the two. Looking for male and female vocal mic that will give you that smooth silkly full sound.

the kiwi will give you the silky sound without EQing at all. You have to wrestle the U87 a little bit, but you'll get there. However, if you really want the U87 to shine, you have to send it to Klaus for a Mod to take out those factory-installed limitations.

Klaus Heyne - probably THE most respected modder of vintage mics on the planet.

The BLUE mics are nice, but you might also want to look at Brauner and Soundelux. Great stuff! As for the U87, I've personally never been a huge fan, but it can certainly work well on some people.

The new U87 doesn't sound like the original, FWIW. I find the newer one to be more "silky" and "smooth." The old one has a richer sound without such an open high end, to my ears, at least the ones that I've used.

I like them both. I think the newer one would be better suited to the style you're mentioning. The older one is awesome for tenors.

prorec contributing editor Garry Simmons has just finished a piece on the Kiwi. I don't know how soon it will hit the front page or if it has been transmitted to the front office yet, but you could check prorec.com in about a week or so, it should show up.
