Does anyone have this EQ, or has heard it?
http://www.tlaudio.co.uk/tlaudio/docs/products/eq2.htm

It seems to be a very good EQ, and I was looking for a tube eq.

>>>>> plenty of used ones out there...TL made a few improves along the way -- or unimprovements depends how you look at the build { MKII series v.s. ? }. Not as much headroom but, only a few hundred $ on the used market..they are a great unit for that price. ALso look at the TL Audio 2011, Ivory 5013 ~~ maybe not a true 'tube circuitry" in the sense of the upper price range gear. Look for a used NightPro EQ or a SPL in that price range..if you are looking for the "pseudo-tube" warm sound.

Tony Larkin (the TL in TL Audio) stuff rocks. Great sounds and reasonably priced. We have several preamps and comps, and are most happy with them.

Would you consider the EQ 2 as pro gear or project studio? I know the Ivory is project quality but was not sure how much better the EQ 2 was.

EQ 2 is a pro gear --if you know how to use it with pro execution--if that is vague enough

Thanks for the input. My next question is, is the Massive Passive worth 3 times the price of the EQ 2 in a good project studio? ;\)

That depends on how good the studio was (converters if digital, monitors etc.,) and whether the kind of output or product from this studio warranted that kind of expense.

So yes, it could be worth three times as much, but it would depend.

If my clients could afford the extra cost of the Manley or similar -- yes. Will you hear the difference?? Depends on your audio chain you have at present..the room ...your experience in detailing that difference. Maybe place your money elsewhere in the studio first ~~~ mics/pres/monitors/etc.

Well since I record mostly my own music and friends (at this time)and have project studio converters (and cannot see getting Apogee's)until I start making money in my studio, the EQ 2 could be a good eq for my studio. I want to see if I can borrow it and compare it to my Cambridge Eq. I am hopeful that I can dial in a nice gentle colored tube sound to my signal.

The EQ 2 may be no Massive Passive, but according to the email response I received from TL Audio, the EQ 2 is being used in pro production in studios. I asked them the difference between their Ivory and EQ 2 and this is the response I received. Of course this does not mean the EQ will meet your needs, but it does clarify that the EQ 2 is a serious EQ.

Quote:
The EQ on the Ivory 5013 is in terms of frequencies and facilities is virtually the same as an EQ-2. The differences lie in the amount of valve stages and the type of power transformer used to run the valve stages. The Ivory runs the valves at 150v and has a valve stage just before and just after the EQ stage of each channel. The EQ-2 has valve stages in each of the parametric EQ stages and also a valve stage before and after the EQ section, 6 valve stages per channel. The valves run at 250v on the EQ-2. The difference the amount of valves and voltage plays is an important part of the sound character between the two units. With the higher voltage you get a cleaner signal with better signal to noise figures. The extra valves allow valve warmth to be achieved in the gain stages of each EQ section as well as in the preamp section. If you put the Ivory 5013 next to the EQ-2 and listen, the Ivory has a slighter dirtier, grainier quality whereas the EQ-2 has more clarity and body to it's sound. The difference is subtle but there is a classier quality about the EQ-2. The EQ-2 also has our high quality mic preamps (the Ivory 5013 does not have mic pres), sweepable high and low pass filters on each channel, the on switch for each EQ filter keeps the circuit cleaner if these are not used and also the ability to gang the left and right channels for very accurate stereo EQ'ing. The EQ-2 has been used to master many albums and was used to track and master the last Bond movie at Air studios. The Ivory 5013 has the "Fat" switch that adds a gentle high and low boost and also the option to fit our DO-2 24-bit digital AD card. Let me know if you need any further information.

Best Regards,

Phil Darke

Ah, one that they give some real juice to make it go. 220 volts or so on the plate! That makes it a serious tube box assuming other quiality factors are there, and I'm sure they are.

How much for this beast?

Well it's made in England, right? So, it should be half that amount. I mean, how can they expect to compete with all the quality American made gear? \:\)
