I want the capability of simultaneously recording a drum set, vocals, and midi all at once. I will be on a WinXP system with P4 3.2GHz on a ABIT IC7 Mobo, 2 SATA Drives, and 1GB Ram.

Will be using Cubase SX.

I have looked at the MOTU 828, 896, 2408.....but the WinXP problems have completely thrown me off.

what about the M Audio Omnistudio USB or the Firewire 410?

Any other suggestions?

What MOTU problems with XP? I haven't had any or heard of any. I know their MIDI interfaces have had issues.
If the MAudio devices will cut it for you I'm sure you'll do fine with them. Or look at Presonus Firestation they are cheap now for some reason.

I use the 828mkII with a pc running XP and I've had NO PROBLEMS. Specs are: P4 2.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Intel 856PERL mobo.

I'd go with the Delta 1010 PCi or Echo Layla over any USB or FireWire solution. Both are very solid driver-wise.

Layla24...sounds great and will work fine with XP and Cubase...just download the latest driver from Echo.

Thank you all very much for your replies. I have decided on the Delta 1010. I think its stability and expansion possibilities have won me over.

Beatnik16,

I use the Delta-1010s. I was under the impression that the MIDI channels are for control, only! Never use them. I also never installed the "OMS" software (see page 9 of the PDF Manual ). I currently don't have access to the MIDI channels for recording or playback in "Adobe Audition" (Formerly "Cool Edit Pro"). Maybe, the software doesn't support MIDI. I am lacking in this area. Any update from a knowledgable person would be most appreciated. Just want to make sure you don't become a dissatisfied Delta user. Otherwise, I love them. They work great on WinME (really!), XP-Home and XP-Pro.

I heard there were issues with some PCI sound card interfaces and the old "VIA 794" series chipsets. It affected Delta and Motu. That is all old information. Maybe, that was what you ran across. New issues seem to be coming up around the *Intel 875* chipset AND *Hyperthread* enabled CPUs. I am still trying to get up to speed on that issue.

Good luck on your final decision! Hope you make great recording with your final choice!

what exactly do you mean with the MIDI issues on the 1010s? i would like to be able to have fully MIDI implimentation at some point.

would i just be able to hook up a MIDI BreakoutBox if i needed more than single in/out MIDI?

Here is the software patch bay for the Delta card. Notice that there is no option to select the MIDI interface to record from...

I am guessing that MIDI recording software would have no issues...? I really don't know. Maybe something like Cakewalk or Acid might work just fine. But, I don't use those.
