I am looking at getting a mic primarily for recording kick drum and bass guitar. Just wondering if the RE20 is worth the extra $240. The RE20 would be more versitle, right? And since the D112 is more of a kick drum standard I kind of would like something else. I have used them both some time ago and liked them both as well. So would anyone like to share their opinions on this?

Oh and sorry if this is another one of those dreaded XXXX vs XXXX threads. Yes I know it is all a matter of an opinion and that is what I am looking at getting. Then again maybe that issue was on another board, oh well whatever.

Thanks for reading.

Why not both. Try it you may surprize yourself.

Give a listen to the Audix D6. I've had great results with it.

The RE20 is still one of my favorite mics... But my current fave, for the kick, is the RE27ND (looks a lot like an RE20).

Yes, it's a matter of opinion... but IMO, the RE20 is one of (if not THE) best kick drum mic ever built. And yes, it's useful for a lot more sources than a D112 is... including bass cabinets, sax and horns, voiceovers, even lead vocals. It's a great mic - well worth the extra cash IMO.

If you need a third option, try a Sennheiser e602 kick mic. I know that I seem to mention that alot 'round here - but hey, I love it!!

Cheers!

The RE20 is a more versatile mic, I think you'd be better off with it than the D112, which is really only good for kick drum.

I love the RE20 on kick. The D112 is good too. Here are the differences
to my ear: the RE20 seems to emphasize the "thump" that you can feel
in your chest -- around 80 hz. A D112 placed the same way seems to
emphasize a slightly lower fundamental -- say 50 or 60 hz. Also, the D112
might be a bit more "scooped" in the low mids, while the RE20 seems
more accurate. Of course, sometimes scooped is good.

If you want to save money, get the D112. On the other hand, you'll
probably find other uses for the RE20 (vocals, voice overs, guitar
cabinets, brass, etc.) , while I doubt that you'll use the D112 on anything
else.

As an aside, I suggest trying one of the many Chinese cheapie
large diaphragm condensor mics. Some of these go for as little
as $50. Kick is one place (some would say the only place) that
they often excel. This is due, in no small part, to the sound of
their FETs getting overloaded from the high SPLs of a typical
kick. This is a cheap way to approximate the coveted sound
of a Neumann 47 FET on kick.

RE 20, or preferrably, the 27 n/d for sure.

The D-112 has a "sound" it works for per se. The RE 20 can just work on almost any kick.

My D112 never seems to make the final cut these days. There are just too many kick mics that do a better job. I'm loving AT25's, old D12's and the new Audio Technica Dual Element. I have not checked out the Yamaha Sub-Kick yet, but that sounds very interesting as well.

I used to own a D112, and was never really happy with it. I sold it and bought an Audio Technica ATM25, which to me is the best kick drum mic you can get...
