I am a productions manager at a college radio station and we (the station) are interested in buying a new mic preamp for recording to hard disk (DAW). I have been looking at the Focusrite Platinum series preamps (with compressors and all) to buy for recording (mostly) vocals. However, I am at a lost as to reading most of the specs provided by the Focusrite company’s website. Can anyone give me some help as to what is I should look for in a pro-sumer preamp?

Also, I do not understand what I should look for in the spec sheets. What is good and what is bad [in quality].

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Look at John Hardy mic pres. A goo dplace to start.... clean, clear, not too expensive, not too cheap. Another option might be the Midas XL-42. Similar price range, with 2 channels, eq, and some warmth.

A preamp with compressor, limiter, de-esser, EQ and an optional AD converter mainly developed as front end for DAWs is the Channel One from SPL.

Especially the EQ and compressor parameters are optimized for vocals.

For less money look at the Track One.

Spec sheets won't help you much. Listening to and twiddling with the units in question will help you a lot. Forming a relationship with someone who has some experience with this will also help you a lot.

In the lower-line channel strip category, I have yet to hear a "magic bullet" whose sound belies it's price. They're mostly a step up from typical Mackie preamps, but I haven't found one yet that shines above the others in the same category.
