If burning data to DVD+R (i.e. using a combo burner such as Lacie's based on the Pioneer A106) and using Toast DO NOT use the drop down option "DVD". This function will work fine with DVD-R's but with DVD+R will create a DVD that is unreadable by OSX (though the data is fine and was actually verified within Toast).

Set Toast to Data CD and change the format to Mac OS Extended CD (to allow a 4+gig CD to be created.) It would have been helpful if this warning had been notated ANYWHRE by ANY of the companies producing such products.

I am still unable to read any DVD+R back ups I made with this DVD function on any Mac, if anybody has any information I would appreciate it. Of course Apple drives are intentionally crippled to not read DVD+R but an external drive is only hampered by the OS itself. It may have something to do with UDF formatting (so much for "Universal"). As far as I know Panther retains this inability despite the rumours otherwise. Apparently the UDF reader by SAI does not work with 10.2.8 or 10.3.

None that I am aware of. I own a Phillips DVD recorder which uses +R so I was using the same media for both and buying 4X at bulk prices. The play compatibilty now is about the same with newer players but I would say that the fact that there is disadvantages to +R is a reason not to use it unless you have to. I would recommend purchaisng combo burners though because it's hard to tell what the market is going to do. BTW, my Apple does play +R Video DVD's made on the Phillips fine.

Thanks for that information, chris.

I think IŽll stay with DVD-R.
For me it always seemed DVD+R is just a cheaper DVD-R because it does not fulfill every point of the DVD-R standard.

Also, and to my mind very important, DVD+R/W is not approved by the DVD Forum, thus cannot be used to replicate from, and can never use the DVD logos either.
Useful for home backups only IMO.
Stick to DVD-R/W, Maxell or Verbatim as they have the best set top compatibility ratings.
Never a coaster in over 250 so far, and still counting.
