Hi Guys,
Something I haven't come across before!
I set up an Apple G4 for my brother in law and he called me to say that it powers up as soon as it gets mains power???
Is this a function and how can I turn it off??
Cheers
Alan.

This is not the Apple troubleshooting forum, and unless you work for Bill Gates, to bash other brands, go here , and you will have any answer very quickly. (I had some answers to questions in 5 minutes to 1 hour!)

This is an open forum to discuss anything you want, especially if it is audio related.
No it is not normal for a mac to power up when it is plugged in. You should hav eot press the power button on the front to get the computer to power up. The board may be shorted or defective, contact Apple if the comuter is still under applecare warranty for a replacement board. Otherwise, check MacGuru http://www.macgurus.com/ or the Apple discussion boards for help finding the parts.

Thanks Where02190, I didn't think it was normal.
The unit was bought second hand from a design company where they had at least 25 of them on a network and I thought this was a result of their power up system.
BTW I Own and operate a commercial recording studio and use 2 G4's in my daily business, My brother in law is a Primary school teacher and wanted the same machine as me so he could introduce the kids to music using the digital domain with a view to school projects being recorded and performed. In fact you could say that all three machines will be almost exclusively used for digital recording.
Whats this forum called again???....I didn't think I had to explain every time I have a question....cheers CIA
Thanks again where.....and cheers
Alan.

Alan, that's a great idea with the school. Good for you (& you're brother in law) helping kids get involved in music. With more of this, maybe the music business will have a good future after all!
Your fellow Scotsman,
John

Do you have a USB MIDI interface connected?
My G4's will do this if I connect power and the MIDI interface is powered down. If this is your situation, just keep the MIDI interface powered up. Even if you don't have a MIDI interface, it still sounds like a USB conflict.
Good luck

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the support Flyscots..whereabouts in the SW?? Dumfries by any chance?
Hi Roger,
At the moment the only USB Device connected is a HP printer. I am running a trimmed down set of extensions as I intend to installCubase on the machine.
Any suggestions as to resolving a USB conflict with a printer as the only possible source?? Things could only get worse once I install soundcard and Midi interface in the coming weeks.
Thanks for the tip though.
Cheers
Alan.

Hi Alan
Not sure about OS9 as I can't run it on my machine (and Classic doesn't give you the relevant control panel) but in OSX if you go to Energy Saver in System Preferences, Click "Show Details" and check the Options Tab there is a check option to "Restart Automatically after a Power Failure".
Hope this is relevant
All the best
Mike

Nearly Alan, I'm in Kirkcudbright, although it's just temporary hopefully. I'm recently back from LA and am currently working out what to do next after I finish mixing some songs I recorded over there.

Hi Alan
Try disconnecting the printer first.
Then if that doesn't help, you could re-set the PMU or CUDA chip on the motherboard. You will, however, have to search the Apple support pages to find the right procedure for your machine.
Then you could try re-installing the OS without the HP stuff and see if it helps. The reason I say re-install the OS is that some versions of HP printer drivers are hard to get rid of, they just don't delete like they should.
Best of luck

In OSX, there is an option with power saver to "power up after power outage" or something like that. My guess is that you need to toggle it.

I have an Evolution MK249c USB keyboard controller that will cause my Mac G4 to start as soon as mains power is switched on from a power strip. This only happens if the MK249c is obtaining it's power from the USB connection and not the wall wart. If I plug the MK249c into a powered USB hub, like the Griffin USB Audio Hub, the Mac will no longer do this.
