How do you use the mike most?
Where does it shine?
I tried it and found it kinda plain.
I don't get the 3k dip?

Would i be better off with a 4050 or Shure ksm44?

Probably the most use comes recording acoustic guitars. Haven't found a guitar yet that didn't sound amazing with a pair of 414's.

They're also my first choice for tom mics...yes that's right I said tom mics. While I won't be using them on a bashing punk rocker, a seasoned, experienced drummer I can use them and place them so they are never in danger. Man what killer tone.....

They get occasional use as overheads or hat mic(whihc is pretty rre I even track a hat mic‚ however I tend to favor a Shure VP88 for the overhead chores. For double headed bass drums, especially for Jazz, they're great.

I've used them alot on electric guitars, and they are a staple on piano, although the Audio Technica 4033A and (again) the VP88 also do great jobs.

Often they are used on reeds, especially bari sax and clarinet.

And of course they are a killer vocal mic. Not for everyone, but for indepth clarity of in your face depth, or soft, whisery vocals, they rock.

Yes they are very good for toms but it is my first choice snare top mic (with pad and windscreen). It sounds very open and crisp and I had never trouble with the hh.

Cheers Wolfgang

The 414 is one of the most versatile of all mics. It can be used on just about anything. It might be the best mic you can buy for versatility at that price.

If by "plain" you mean that it doesn't add anything, you might be missing the point of a 414. Would "neutral" be a better word?

Whenever I find myself in a situation where the source material sounds great but for whatever reason that sound isn't being captured, I'll try a 414 because it tends to give a very truthfull representation of what the source actually sounds like. (Also a first call on high hat)

Good value for money.

As whereNP said they are great on acoustic guitars.
Good as overheads.
Very good with electric guitars.
Very good with vocals - although some singers just dont suit them.

I've never used them on Snare or Toms but I will next time I get the chance!

There is another AKG 414, the 414 B TLII with transformerless output. How does it sound compared to the 414 B-ULS?

They are fantastic on female and tenor male vocals. I use mine a lot for sax and mandolin as well.
