I am wondering for those who have a studio with a control room, vocal room etc, how much money are they making these days. Also curious on their net salary, as though you may make good money, you have rent, all the cost for employees, and all the other over head.

Owners don't get a salary. They get what is left over, if anything, from the balance of the collections minus the expenses.
Most people don't make money from owning studios.

Yes, the answer is: They earn exactly enough to stay in business if they're lucky.

My guess, and it's only an educated guess from my own experience in the field, is that the only way to really make money, unless you're one of the few elite, is to be the engineer, producer, writer and maybe player, in your own studio. Hire other studios as needed (if you need a real piano for instance and you don't have a good one in yours) and other assistants as needed. Try to get interns to work as cheaply as possible, if not for free. This creates other problems though.

If you have corporate clients, you could easily make six figures.
If you are depending on musicians to make money, could be a losing proposition. Most now believe they can record themselves on the cheap.

1) high expense for a very high quality recording
or
2) low to moderate expense for a moderate to high quality recording.
Many people don't have the bucks to spend on recording, and seek out small studios or home-based project studios to get a decent recording for cheap. Is it going to be an amazing quality recording? No. But it will be an amazing value.

And I think since the recoupability factor decreases, meaning less of a chance to "get signed" and turn the recordings into actual bread and butter dividends, the amount of bands really wanting, willing and able to justify spending the extra dough to make truly high quality recordings will further diminish.

Studio Toon, in the Netherlands: 100m2 tracking room, 35m2 control room. Tascam MX2424, Yamaha O2R, rates including engineer: 16 euro per hour, 130 euro per day.
Well? profit or no profit?
Lots of studio's here. Another one: DDA profile board, Tascam DA machines, nice room, 19 euro per hour.
I can make 35 euro per hour with just some handtools, by repairing central heating or plumbing.
Weird.

There are 2 Studios, 1 analog with an Amek Mozart, and the digital SSL. All the outboard gear from the analog studio is in the rear rack but in the SSL room I decided to go for 2 sideracks (on wheels) that I can really have the benefit to work in the sweet spot of the room. Therefore the sideracks are full and the rear rack is empty right now.
The Amek room
Actually I think we will never use the rear rack but the two studios are completely identical from design and monitoring that I put the rear rack in to have the same sound in both studios.
And this picture is taken 1 week after opening so the siderack you can see is looking "a little bit" different now.
But this studio canīt go for 130 euros per day, from 2 weeks on itīs 800 a day.
Cheers Wolfgang

You'll find a studio on nearly every street corner here. Many of them don't exist long, but they spoil the band market.
The studio I mentioned, (Studio Toon) used to be 18 euro. Now it's 16 euro. I visited their website and got surprised they have such a big tracking room. Don't know the guy(s).
800 a day huh? I wish I could ask 800 a day, but right now my 400 seems to be the 'expensive' part of the market.
Imagine: 72 channel DDA-AMR automated board, two inch machines, hi end mics and a 90 m2 room with a great sound.
Sheesh....

On a related subject, does anyone know of a Studio Owner / Studio Manager discussion forum. I'm considering joining the ranks, and I'm sure I could learn from these discussions and maybe ask a few questions from time to time. They should create one here (hint, hint)
A partner and I (we're both engineer's) are keeping our eyes peeled for a well built room that would be great for mixing and tracking as well. Not concerned about the console as we'll probably switch it out if it's not to our liking. Seems like that could be a better way to go vs. buying a warehouse and building a room from scratch. Does anyone know where to look for ads of studios for sale (besides the back of MIX?)
As for the original question, I look at it this way...I'll be engineering, so I'll be getting my same rate I always get for tracking and mixing, plus they'll be more $ because of the room rates (minus expenses). Plus, you got your own spot and the freedom to cut deals, do spec work, ect. I know at some point I'm gonna go for it.

Steve, there's the Studio business Forum here on Musicplayer... it's not the most active of the forums, but some pretty knowledgeable people / industry "heavyweights" do participate there...

Hope this is of use to you. Check it out.

Sheesh.... And this old.....uuhuhuhu...I mean guy is also one of the best studio's.
But he knows exactly how to make a sound (not only in the toilet). So if these "musicians" past by in his studio and think they know more then sign they call him arraogant.
If the atitude of a lot of dutch musicians will change in a way that quality counts sign will ha ve a lot of work.

We have very modest gear--not even offering tape--and charge $1000 per tune --3 tune min. That averages out to $100+ per hour --- we perform most of the arranging + playing on the tunes and a "semi-mastered" CD @ the end of 3 days ~~~~But it is all relative to the "local" cost. A fixer-upper, 1950'ish, 2bed, 1100sq/ft house is about $800k ** here in Carmel.
Wolfgang....with the gear and studio space, you have referred to in your post. We would have to charge $800 per hour --just to brake even!!

No the fact is 800 a day (2 weeks booking) is on the very top end what we can get in our area. In Munich, 180 Km away, there used to be over 120 24 track studios and now the rest of them, maybe 20, have a terrible price war.
With a little bit of "luck" you can get a SSL 4000, 48 track analog studio with good but old outboard gear for 400 a day.
These studios just "are there" so no maintenance no new gear and if the owner isnīt sitting behind the desk you get an "engineer" who is working at lowest price.
For that reason we canīt ask more than 800 a day otherwise the bands say we go to Munich (and I say half price half quality. But you know, musicians...). But thatīs OK, we are well booked and if the studios are making a "black zero", the money is done with the labels and our own products like a guitar set (Accoustic guitar with book and CD for 65. Donīt ask me where we get the guitars from.) flute set, children books with CD, audio books like a children bible and so on.
The Amek studio is booked 16 hours a day just for the inhouse productions so if somebody wants to book the cheaper Amek room, he will get the SSL room anyways (Donīt tell it everybody).
Cheers Wolfgang

Non smoking here either Wolfgang.
I don't like to work in a smokey polluted room.
Bad for the concentration.
Tell me, (only the true ) do you like the amek more then the digital ssl?
Just curious.

Hello Errol
In the very beginning as we planned the new studio there were a choice of 4 desks: SSL MT, SSL 9000, Neve 9098, Sony Oxford and Neve Capricorn.
But as Iīm doing 3 or 4 different mixes (remixes), recordings or projects a day it has to have total recall and reset within minutes and not hours, so it was quite clear it has to be a digital desk.
I wanted to have the Sony cause it looked better, the Neve was too old and the SSL too large (size) but in the end SSL gave us the best price and I think it was a good decision (Neve is still older and the Sony discontinued).
To your question: The SSL has , compared to the Amek, absolut brilliant mic pres (the Amek always sounded compressed I never had a good drum sound) and a way better automation (Okay you canīt really compare the SSL automation where every pot, fader and button is automatable with the VCA automation from the Amek) and the fact that you have 4 different EQs and Gate/Comp in every channel (96 inline) is another reason to go for the SSL.
To be honest: Even if an analog desk (maybe the 9000K) would sound better (which I doubt) there is no way for us to leave the posibilities of a digital desk in our workflow. If a big company like Siemens is coming back and asking: Yes I know we did the mix 2 weeks ago and everything is alright but the director of the movie decided to let the fridge flying in from the left side and not from the right (which really happened!!) we have to book your studio for a day to do the mix again. In the SSL studio 20 minutes (or 2 coffees) - in the Amek 1 day up to impossible.
If there will be a Procontrol 2 which looks better and is more professional, the Amek will be replaced within days. So far to what I prefer to work on.
Cheers Wolfgang
