I'm interested in knowing how to connect a Mackie 1202 to a MOTU 828-mk if possible at all.
Do I connect all outputs of the Mackie to all inputs of the Motu? Then run the Motu outputs back into the board?

connect the (main outputs) and (alt outputs) of the mackie to inputs 1&2 and 3&4 of the 828. This will give you 2 selectable sets of stereo record channels thru the 828. Connect the monitor outs of the 828 to the tape ins of the mackie and route thru the Control Room stereo buss to your amp/monitors

good luck!

On the larger Mackie boards it is possible to derive more discreet signal feeds by pluging 1/4" cables only half way in (1 click) to the provided insert points for each channel. It is usually not too hard to find that halfway point. Then the mic trim controls the amount of signal going into the 828. Any available internal gain adjustments on the 828 can be used to optimize the matching of gain between the two. First optimize the mic pre trim on the Mackie according to Mackie instructions (Solo with faders at "0" and adjust the mic trim to stay out of red on meters used to be the recomended procedure). Then find the 828 setting which most closely matches- then fine tune again with the mic pre trim.
Note that the first two (front panel) inputs on the 828 have a different gain structure - and can probably be overloaded more easily because they have the additional gain for microphone level inputs.

If you need to combine multiple sources onto a single or stereo pair channels then repatch from the busses. If you mix through the Mackie back to tracks in the computer, when that is done the stereo mix bus will need to be patched in to two inputs of the MOTU (probably not the mic input channels for the reasons stated above). Usually the busses have a higher output than the insert point, so they can also be used when more gain is needed.

It is possible to have a few channels of insert points usually routed ("normalled") to a few channels of the 828 and busses and mix busses hooked into other channels. As you use your setup you will learn what is most convenient for your usual recording procedure.
Don't use the monitor outs to feed the 828 because then if you solo something on the Mackie the signal being recorded would be affected.
