alright guys... I am a newbie... and i am doing research so that I can build myself a new DAW... now I want to build one that will last me awhile...
so I was wondering if people can give me ideas (specs) as to what their DAW would look like (hardware)if they built one today...
keep in mind I am not rich but i know quality aint cheap either...
so I guess what I amsaying is what is your ideal DAW?
or where can I go to read up on them more?
thanks...

Currently, I write a lot of my music in Reason. I have it Rewired to Cubase SX. I also use Fruity Loops from time to time. It can be used with SX as a DX/VST plug-in. I record external sources into SoundForge or Cool Edit. I like the effects in Cool.
Externally, I use an Oxygen 8 for midi control. I'm also using a Nord Lead 2 and an MC 505. My microphone is some cheap lame thing.
Computer specs:
1.8 Ghz Pentium 4 256 MB RAM Audiophile sound card
All of this adds up to more toys then I know what to do with and plenty of computing power to make it happen. Get yourself a good DAW (I think Cakewalk has some powerful and affoardable options). Most everything in your studio will revolve around it. A good computer is a must. Nothing less then 600mHz, 256 RAM (you can do stuff with less, but it'll be a bitch). A quality sound card will help you also. Get something with ASIO drivers if you can.

this could be my dream DAW, with touch screen controlled software, keyboard and some knobs.
Waiting for this, i would base my daw on a PowerMac G4 or G5 (G4 is far enough) With 1 GB RAM, 2 or 3 HD (a pair ATA and others Firewire 800 A native DAW software (Logic 6, Nuendo) (no more obsolete DSP PCI cards, which are old before you buy them) An interface suiting your needs (from 2 to 12 I/O), MIDI interface, MIDI keyboard and of course if you don't have them a pair of really professional monitors like Genelec 1032A, and a pair of condenser mics.

If you can afford it,get an Athlon FX-51 with a board based on the NForece 3 chipset,or a Dual Opteron. To afford something right now,a 333FSB 2800 T-Bred B based on an NForce 2 chipset with at least 500mb PC 2700 hi pref level 2 DDR(Mushkin or Crucial).Use only Antec/Enermax or Sparkle Power(450+),Western Digital 8mb cache "J" series drives,Ati Radeon 9000 series AGP.This is the most powerful sytem at a low price,or,get the FX-51 or Dual Opteron to leave everything in the dust.

The post right above yours (Alndln FX-51) is a great techical start. If you decide to go with an Intel processor, I've been reading a number of posts about the nyperthread technology messing people up. You might want to avoid it.
Just for reference, I ran a P3/733MHz system with 512MB of SDRAM that had no trouble laying down 16 real tracks at 44.1KHz/32-bit (24-bit with 8-bit floating point). Today's P4/2.0+GHz CPUs will easily do teh trick. It will be the realtime processes you add to tracks that will eat up CPU resources.
If you need to get up to speed building a PC, check out some of the hardware review web sites, like... http://www.techreport.com and http://www.tomshardware.com
If you need to look at sound cards, I think there are some articles in the archives at http://www.musicplayer.com
You may or may not need to get a mixer to go with that sound card. Something to think about when planning.
There are a number of software packages out there, each with different advantages. Tell us more about your recording needs.
Take a look at my site and see the direct I went. It may not be right for you. But, it is a perspective... Do some research before spending. You can down a bit of cash to set up. Might as well minimize the bad purchases.
Good luck!

For more info check out the Recording.org DAWworld Computing forum:
Start at http://www.recording.org At the top click on Pro Talk Forums Scroll down to the DAWworld section Click on Computing
That should take you to: http://www.recording.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=30
Start searching for things like motherboard, chiptset, etc. After you are done reading, ask some specific questions.

IMO the idal Personal Computer for your DAW is this: A dual 2 GB, with dual 1 GB frontside bus,1 to 8 GB DDR SDRAM at 400 MHz, ATI RADEON 9600 Pro with 64MB DDR SDRAM for dual monitor usage, One FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports (one on front); three USB 2.0 ports (one on front), two USB 1.1 ports (on keyboard, Built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet, native multichannel 96/192 audio streaming, native MIDI processing, audio latency fixed at 1.5 ms. A computer with those specs is the Apple G5 Dual 2 GHz, with UNIX operating system and Logic or Nuendo software.
